Rear shock & other problems (new1200gs adv)

Mine has gone to Battersea, they said they have 5 others in there for shock related work. ETA at least 2 weeks to get the bits. Ill be onto BMW Uk for a replacement while I wait. Once its back straight in for a multistrada.

mmmmmmmm Not happy with BMW parts and reliability so going to chop it in for something Italian, seriously? :augie

ESA

Mine has just gone after 5000 miles 58 reg thank god it's still under warranty till september, Bahnstomer said its the second one they've had the other one being last Tuesday:augie
But they say there not sure when BMW will get the parts which I find strange, its not as if they've stopped making the bloody thing:blast
Might get a XT1200Z Super Ténéré never had any problems with jap crap and parts are also in stock even if it has to come from Japan it only takes 3 days

...Be very positive and for fecks sake, don't threaten them with the old "not fit for purpose" shite that gets spouted from time to time. It bike is fit for purpose but an item has failed. As long as they are replacing it, they are in the clear and doing their job, albeit slowly... ...Good luck with it.

If a bike's sitting in the shop for weeks it is NOT doing its job. Sharkz bought the bike to ride it, not to watch it grow moss in (dealers) parking lot. If it's still in warranty, after such a long time with no solution offered I'd reject the bike...

well i did it. i took legal advise and wrote a letter. i noted bilco's advise, "positive and don't threaten" but did assert "not fit for purpose" to the dealership sales mngr quoting relevant consumer act. on tue he called me in person and i would say he is taking the assertion seriously because he made a fair offer. im taking time to consider it. i will keep you posted as to outcome but just to thank you for your very useful suggestions. i wouldn't have been able to be this objective and informed if it wasn't for you guys and the knowledge you take time to share on this thread and many others. my thanks to all of you wherever you are...

...and to the many good folk who work at dealerships who genuinely try to resolve problems. i thank you also.

Just phoned the dealer still no shocks and still no news on when they may become or may not become available. They have a loan bike now so at least that something.

For a company the size of BMW to have such a poor supply chain is a joke. Ive really had enough now.

Regards
Chris

Rear Shocks

Hi All,

Quite a lot of unhappy chappies here, just one question.

Are the shock failures on bikes with ESA ?

I did contribute to a post on here last year with regards to a BMW technician who ive known a while, who advised me not to get a bike with ESA, im now on my second GS and GSA :) without ESA and ive had no problems.

I had my yearly service yesterday and had a quite word with another BM man and we discussed my bike and the lack of ESA and the rear shock, he informed me that the ESA and nonESA shocks are completely differant and the ESA one is not built to the same quality as the non ESA one.

Now i am no mechanical expert and this was just what i was told so dont shout at me :D

Mine was ESA. Put it another way if it hadnt been ESA Im sure some bright spark from the garage could have sourced one.

just one question... Are the shock failures on bikes with ESA ?...

mine was esa too...

because of all the strife with shock and fpc they have offered to replace my '09 with new '10 (with esa again - i know, i know). ive signed the spec. interesting thought about esa shock being the issue. ta LBL, now i cant say i wasn't warned

tried to think long & hard about opting to get money back and buy boring/reliable jap option. but like most who ride GS im a sucker for it. in the end it didn't matter how may threads i read about GS problems or hours waited in rain for the breakdown van, when it comes to this bike i have the objectiveness of a crack addict. i just can stop regardless what my sensible honda mate says. but thanks to the advise from you guys and co-operation nice 'dealer' at least i will have a new one

so hopeful - or is it wishful(?) that '10 bike will give me years of joy even if its 99.5% same bits as the last one. its been 2 mnths since i left it in their yard. on thursday i will shove oyster travel card where it belongs - up mayor bojo's rectum

wish me luck with '10

Glad a potential resolution has been forthcoming - been watching this with interest - while knocking on wood !! 2008 ESA 1200 GSA !! To date with no problems...

Seems a fair offer after so much pain - I hope the new bike is one that wasn't built like the last one in a rush on a Friday afternoon...

On Saturday morning - took my 6-month old GSA with only 4500km on the clock for a nice ride.
I've noticed that from the start, she (as well as a mates GSA that we both got new on the same day) "pinged" a lot and it was obviously signs of incorrect mixture.
BMW here in SA say there's nothing they can do about it.... the settings are due to the EEC regs.

So travelling at aroun 120km/hr, I decided to overtake a car and opening the throttle (about 5500rpm) there was an almighty bang and a cloud of black/blue smoke shot from the exhaust.
Mate behind me said it looked like I'd locked the back wheel....

So what does one do. Obviously these bikes are set for European conditions, but we have really hot weather (on a nice cold day - air is thicker and no pinging) - so surely this incorrect fuel mixture and detonation is really screwing up the engine?

I've been told there's been a couple of engines totally blwoing up here in SA and that BMW do a complete motor replacement.
My luck would be that mine goes outside the 2 year warranty period...
