Rear shocker knackered

Just wondering did any of the bikes that had a problem where equiped with a splashguard or mudslinger, just wondering if it is the crap getting in causing the problems :rob

Or is it causing them to overheat? I had to remove the hugger off my VFR because the shock was not getting enough air flow to keep it cool on hot days.

Another good point the plot thickens, maybe thats why BMW leave a gap and just put another piece of plastic to protect the shock.......

My first GS, 12,000 mls shock failed...no mudsling.
2nd GS shock failed 6.000 mls mudsling fitted.

So reading this post we have the following views regarding ESA shock failure

1. Fitting a Mudsling/ hugger may make the shock overheat and fail
2. Not fitting a Mudsling/hugger will cause the shock to fail due to grit and dirt damaging the seals
3. Jetwashing your bike will cause the shock to fail

No doubt BMW will claim any/all of the above plus

1. Not washing your bike will cause failure as well as rampant corrosion
2. Carrying a pillion and luggage will cause failure
3. Using your bike offroad or on less than perfect road surfaces

How about this explanation , BMW have the shocks made by SACHS to their specification and they are built down to a no doubt very competitive price ( ie cheap....unless you need to pay for a replacement ). So perhaps if they spent a bit more money on the finish of their products and the quality of the parts they buy in rather than maximising shareholders dividends they wouldn't be paying out so much on warranty claims.

How about this for an explanation.

Sometimes, things just fail. No need to analyse it to death.

Shit happens, move on.

My front went 32000 mls rear 34000, suppose to be an off/on road bike so shocks should be of a higher and more robust than a standard road bike
To say 30 odd thousand is good for a shocker is fuckin bollocks. I would expect the performance to deminish but not fail.
Will let you know if my super ten shock claps out- if ever.

If my GS shock went at these mileages I , instead of forking out £1800 for a new rear, would seriously look at the Wilbers WESA shocks.
Rear - £635 , Front - £590.

Got to be better vfm....
