Rear Wheel Bearing Shot!

Mine 2000 miles and again 11000 miles :D

+1!

11,600. Very wibbly at the rear!
Did an oil service last w/e and had a friendly BuMW tecky do the rest. Took off the rear wheel to change the FD oil and, ooh!, that's not good, all loose like that!

CW in Dorchester rebuilt it with the new type bearing that is reputedly a beefier jobbie with bigger balls. I shall be going to the Orkneys from here shortly so will see how if fares.

Incidentally, the oil that came out was perfectly clear so no evidence of impending failure of the pinion bearing etc, just yet.

Word is that the original is
a) Not up to the job.

b) Does not run in the FD oil anyway but it's a sealed bearing running in it's own grease.

c) Prone to water ingress if the outer seal fails.

It was suggested by a man who should know that when replacing them pack the casing on the outside of the bearing with waterproof grease like the stuff used on outboards to keep the wet out. Be interested in any thoughts from those that know on here.

Apart from the failure itself, that shouldn't have happened, I can't really complain as BuMW were more than generous with the repair cost.

Rear bearing showing 3.4mm lift (checked today with clock gauge) at 2167mls....not a happy bunny

Is that within tolerance:nenau If not, that is what warranty is for so that should make you happy. :augie

60k on mine and all tickety boo:D

How much was that Fluffy? What was the turn around?

Used the recovery on my Carol Nash insurance for getting the beast there. Rang at 06.00 last Tuesday. Collected from home 07.15. Arrived 10.00-ish fault diagnosed by 10.30. CW rang me very soon after saying BuMW would do 100% P+L given that it has has 3 services in 11000 mls (yes, I know, a bit over the top but until recently things financial were good. Sadly no more but hey, ho). I should say that I'd contacted BuMW 's Customer Service and put them in the picture on the Sunday night, I think.
Repairs completed by that evening. Phone call to say "it's done" at end of play.
Bloody good service.
I couldn't get away from work until the following Sat. (last Sat) so picked it up on the trailer. Job Done.

This isn't the only good service I've had from CW. They've always been good.
I should say I have no tie up with them except as a customer :thumb2.

In fact that was the most expensive bit of the whole job.

Am I the only 1150 rider here with a small feeling of schadenfreud here after our tales of wheel bearing woe?

1mm is the maximum lift... this figure is taken from the 09 BM DVD ROM

The bearing is to be replaced with a modified one in three weeks time... but as the guy in the workshop said "your original one came from China, and so is the upgraded one" .... which really fills you with confidence

And as for the fact that it's given this amount of lift with only 2167 mls on the clock, i think is fcuking disgusting. and my letter going out to Bracknell will be in the same vain.

I'm also being told that the record (for the shortest distance to bearing replacement) from this dealer is under 1000mls...

Had the job done yesterday. If the above is true I suppose I should count myself lucky at 6k.........
Thanks Lads.
