I am really surprised by today's events and would welcome your comments..........

First, a bit of history: I have owned various BMs continually since the 70s and my current bike is a 2011 twin cam.

Prior to this bike I always used the same L shaped tool to remove the rear wheel bolts and have never had cause to remove the wheel on my present bike. Whenever I needed a new tyre I would just pop along to Wigan and use a ride-in - ride out service.

This afternoon I went to use my bike and discovered the rear tyre was flat. NO problem as it was due for renewal anyway and I had a spare ready to replace it with. So the plan was to remove the wheel and take it and the spare tyre to my local tyre depot (Bather's in Birkenhead) for them to do the job.

The big surprise was that I didn't have a bolt removal tool in my toolkit on the bike. And then the big surprise: when did BMW replace the old-style wheel nuts with star-drive bolts?....... How are you supposed to remove the wheel otherwise?

I can't believe that I was caught out like this... I have never seen any threads on here ever discuss this dilemma.

A friendly neighbour provided the tools required and the wheel is now off the bike.

Could anyone please confirm that a wheel bolt removal tool is not included in the tool-kit and if not, is the only solution to call out a recovery service if wheel removal is required when away from home?

The days of BMW (or any manufacturer) providing a decent tool kit are long gone. Probably scared of litigation if someone fecks up! From memory, you get a plastic doo dah to remove the oil cap and that's about it!

I bought a set of Torx drivers and a torque wrench that goes to 80nm and is small enough to hide in the top box. Both came from Amazon and are of no great quality, but are good enough to get me out of trouble.
I have a Snapon Torx bit set at home and a Snapon torque wrench that is calibrated, these are used once i get back home to check the wheel bolts are good.
The BMW tool kit is of no use to man nor beast, and is made this way as there are so few parts that can be repaired on the side of the road.

Every other bolt/screw is a Torx on these bikes, why not the rear wheel ? A cursory glance while you do your POWER checks would have informed you of that fact.

Sadly; it is an optional extra at silly money for not great quality.

Far better to work out what you can/will do at side of the road and just carry those tools.

Go to Halfords or any decent shop that sells tools and get a TX50 torx bit. Can get it in 3/8 or 1/2 inch. Personally I'd go 3/8 and as mentitled before get a small torque wrench or a short bar. Tool kit is rubbish. Not sure if you've noticed yet there is no front wheel removal tool either. Think it's a 19mm Allen bolt. Look on ebay, there's quite a few and most have several sizes in one.

I also carry a selection of torx keys (bit like Allen key set but torx heads)

So how long have you had the bike? Have you not checked your toolkit to see what it has?

All 1200's since 04 have had T50 bolts and this is the first time that I know of anyone has mentioned it.

The toolkit is shite as it is on most modern bikes and for a few quid, you can make your own up to suit your needs. All part of bike ownership in my opinion.

You may have a coronary when you see what you need to take the front wheel out........:augie

You don't need fancy tools to make an on-bike toolkit. Just get some cheap kit from eBay and take out the bits you really need.

BUT whatever you choose to take wont be enough to fix even the stuff that's likely to go wrong. Most of the stuff is thread-locked anyway so you'll also need pocket heat gun. You may as well spend a few £s on a breakdown service.

BTW, the front wheel needs a huge hex bit and socket or ring spanner to get the spindle out. Not to mention Torx bits to remove brake callipers and spindle pinch bolt.

The toolkit is shite as it is on most modern bikes (except for KTM, their tool kit is actually pretty much spot on and even includes a bottle opener :D ) and for a few quid, you can make your own up to suit your needs. All part of bike ownership in my opinion.
