Rear wheel trueing on 08 GSA - or new wheel?

So my 40K '08 GSA's list of winter jobs todo is growing by the week...
Clutch replacement, Fr crank oil seal, possible warped fr disks, sticking rear caliper and rough running has been joined by a rear wheel running out of true by about 4 - 5 mm.

I hadnt noticed anything other than more vibes than Im used to above 70mph, but put that down to this being my first GS (and what do I know?). Noticed it didnt have any balance weights a while back, so took it in today for a wheel balance and the chap showed me on the machine how bad it was running out. Too bad to try and balance so he refitted, but couldnt offer anyone to true it up.

A quick web search shows its not an easy job and BMW scrap the wheel after 1/2 an inch of run out.

Dont think its that bad but was not measured. Found a firm in Devon who would refurb, as Im guessing the bearings could do with a freshen up and the hubs been repainted using a Tippex brush so looks shite.

What are the thoughts on refurbing, a new wheel or an aftermarket wheel (if they exist)?

Ive been running this for around a 1000 miles like this, could this have affected the FD or further up the driveline?

I think if most people checked the run out on their spoked GSA wheels they'd be surprised how bad they are. Do you have TPS fitted to yours?

Yes, fitted with sensor, I guess that would need to be transferred to another wheel.

I had my wheels rebuilt by Hagon in Essex. They did a great job and a lot cheaper than new ones

By the way, there are no bearings on the rear wheel.

As Bilko says Alf Hagon does wheel rebuilds. There is also Kevin Blurton in Derby 01332 369085. He's doesn't do email and not that keen on doing cross spokes but his costs are very reasonable. He uses CJ Ward in Burton on Trent for the powder coating. Another great resource for bike finishing work.

+1 for Hagon.....one of the few places happy to take on BMW cross spoked wheels. Had my front done...very pleased with the results at a cost of about £150 including Hermes courier.

Thanks for the replies so far, much appreciated.
Further investigation this afternoon and Im more confused. Had my Dad round and asked him to bring a magnetic clock stand round (ex toolmaker) so we could watch/measure the runout while the wheel was on the bike.
Round and round the wheel went and we couldnt see less than 1mm of runout on either side of the wheel.
Yet I saw with my own eyes the thing doing the wild thang on the tyre mans wheel balancer machine.
It would explain why I dont have massive vibes at any speed.
Could he have mounted it incorrectly on the balancer? Seemed to know what he was talking about (pushed the GS around with no problems, like he had seen one or two in his time).
I guess I need a second opinion and take it somewhere else.

The tun out may be marginal but is the wheel round or oval. This was the problem with mine.

Presume you've checked for lateral free play at the wheel rim.

Have you had the drive flange recall done? There was thread recently where the flange had been badly fitted causing a serious wobble and damage to the final drive bearings. Check the wheel flange runout. If the flange and wheel are out there might be a sweet spot where they cancel out.

Did you also check for ovality whilst you were set up?
