Hi can anybody help i have a 59 plate gsa with 3800 miles on it is my first bmw and its great . I was giving it a good clean on saturday and found play on the rear wheel.is this normal or not .?
Thanks in advance.

Ideally there should be none as it's caused by excessive bearing clearances. I assume you mean play in terms of grabbing the wheel top and bottom and trying to rock the wheel from side to side? Some bikes seem to have some play, like yours, at low milages wheras other do huge miles with the wheel rock solid. The allowed tolerance is 1mm at the rim, if it's more than this I'd talk to whoever you bought it from. There are a lot of threads on the topic if you do a search on final drive or rear wheel play

I take it you mean axial play, i.e. it rocks backwards and forwards if you grab at 6 and 12 o'clock.

There's no play on my 08, and as yours is a 59 plate and still in warranty take it back to the dealer

Is the movement on the complete axle unit or the wheel hub on the splines of the axle? While your looking take a close look at the lugs that the rear disc bolts to. Ive seen two now with this movement and both times its been the hub on the splines.

Up date on rear wheel.
I have checked it today and no play .
Had quick run up the road and play comes back not as much as yesterday
but did do 85 miles on saturday so would heat make any difference.
But i will phone dealer on mondayl

Had exactly this on a GS. Rear hub at ambient temp and no play, go for a blast around and get some heat into rear wheel hub (45 degrees, checked with thermo gun) and the play is there. May be earlier comment does apply, the hub is coming lose on the axle splines with the heat expansion of the hub.
