Just had new pads popped in the rear tonight. 18k and first time they've been changed. Pretty worn but not totally done. All back together and rear wheel popped back on and torqued up diagonally. Wheel runs freely although disc was a we bit hot but new pads so to be expected. What was strange though is a feel a tiny bit of play in the rear wheel at the 6 and 12 position. None at the 9 and 3 position . A tiny sort of click/knock when pulling it. Never felt it before and wasn't there when we put the wheel back on. Disc expanding and magnifying it maybe? Could it be that it's always been there and I'm only noticing it with new pads . Thinking it's the disc touching the pads when I pull it.
Could it be anything to do with the wheel off. Last FD oil change showed no metal or funny stuff. Off to Europe next week so can't really do anything.
Advice welcome though.

Mine does exactly the same,

i also have a weep from the oil seal ..

As much as i'm denying it, i think the bearing has play .... just got to work myself up to the replacement cost....

Let it cool and is the play still there? Mine had play when it was hot but ok cold. Was like that for a good few thousand miles before it went caput

Ive no oil leaking but it just seems funny I've only noticed it immediately after new pads were fitted. Wondered about the wheel being warped but it was put back on in diagonal tightening sequence so can't imagine that has anything to do with it.

Just checked it now its cooled. Play has gone completely. I'm still thinking discs expanding showing tiny bit of normal play.
Any other theories. All feels normal now.

It's the heat expanding the clearances. BMW spec is 1mm at the rim. Sounds like you have a bit to go before you are there.

That seems to make sense. I'd imagine if the FD was going tits up the play would be there when it's cold.

Thank you for all the replies. Noticed the disk was hot when the pulled up. Wheel spins nice and free so assuming it's just been pads that need bedding in. No binding or sticking whatsoever from the brake.

The wheel bearing can be replaced without stripping the FD. However depending on mileage it might be better to spend the extra on rebuilding the FD with a full set of bearings. Mine was dome at 50K miles when the wheel bearing failed.

My rear disc is always quite warm. The linked braking works the back brake quite hard especially if you are not a heavy brake user. In case anyone asks the rear clapper was rebuilt with new seals. The brake runs just as warm as before.

Interesting that the bearing can be replaced on its own. Mind you as it has zero play when cold I'm happy enough with it at the moment.

The oil seal will fail when the bearing gets too (shall we say) loose. You have no problems there. But when it does go, it's a decision as to replacing just the wheel bearing or rebuilding the final drive. At 30K to 50K miles it's worth biting the bullet & doing a full rebuild.

The pivot bearings at the bottom of the final drive don't move much of an angle so will rub away their grease. It's well worth regressing them every 15,000. I don't believe it's in the service schedule. Rebuild fully packed with moly grease.

Hi Kev, enjoy the Euro trip. 2 up I take it?

Nice one. Look forward to your report
