Reason for uneven wear on Anakees ?

Just had to replace the tyres after 6,000 miles mainly due to uneven wear on the front. The front outside corner of each block had worn down to a mm or so while the diagonally opposite corner was 3-4mm and the other two corners about 3mm. Anyone have an explanation for this?. A guy from BMW Sawbridgewoth said "roundabouts do that" but I don't see how. Bike is used 50% for commuting in central London and 50% touring with my wife on the back. Neither of us are very heavy. 6,000 seems pretty poor life for tyres that get an easy life i.e. no track days etc. Dealer also said Tourances don't do this. Any thoughts?

what you are descibing seems to be similar to the way my TKC's have worn on the front. It mat be a case of 'they all do that sir'

6000 miles on my Anakee's and no sign of uneven wear (front or back). Bike has been used for all manner of riding (touring, spirited sunday blasts etc), so i'd have to say they don't all do that. Not really sure where this leaves you but i'd have it back for the dealer to have a look ( assuming it's still under the warranty )

Pressure

This is caused by pressure.. You need to adjust the pressure when you take your wife on the back and drop it back down when solo. The same happens on all brands its called heel & toe wear. Have a look at the Michelin web site for correct pressures for normal and loaded..

I have experienced this on all sorts of tyres car, truck and bike.

Pressure has a bit to do with it as well as the affects of cornering and the way the tyre grips the road.

If you look closely at any tyre you'll see they 'all do that sir' but it's much more noticable on chunky tyres like Tourences and Anakees etc.

I noticed that my Anakees were showing the same ware as you discribe at about 4000 miles, now I have 11'300mls on the front (lost the rear to a puncture at 8388mls ) and it still has a little over a mill at the lowest corner and I reccon it will do another 2'000mls.

I think your dealer might have only a little experiance of this type of tyre, and you would be advised to say no thank you next time he offers to change your tyres, and keep an eye on them for a little longer.

I'm amazed how far the front has gone without acctualy being illeagal even though it started to look dodgie 7'000 mlies ago.

It stlill grips well in the wet too.

Cupping is a common expression.

This has happened on every bike I've owned to date. Normally noticable in the most extreme cases by a certain amount of vibration / rumbling under heavy braking.

Thanks for the pointers to "heel and toe wear" and "cupping". Had an ask around and a net search. Best web reference was

though its for trucks. Other possibilities are that it can be caused by an out of balance wheel, or to quote the web:-

"Replacing the tires (and switching to a brand or design that is less "quirky") may be the only way to cure this kind of wear problem."

or:-

"High speed driving and excessive use of the brakes will cause this type irregular tire wear"

I'll see if the replacement Tourances do the same in a year or so and point taken about not taking it too seriously.

I only get around 4k miles from a rear Anakee at best!!! Wear seeems to be pretty good all round so i would say i am getting my moneys worth. Are there different compunds and i have the soft or is it all linked to my wrist??
