I have noticed a few times that when I go off route and ask the 2610 to recalculate, it doesnt do what I'm expecting it to.

Rather than recalculating from my current position to the final destination, it wants to take me back to the start point then back to where I currently am before continuing.

Very Confusing, anyone else had the same problem??

I've been using the 2610 for 3 years and have never seen that specific problem yet. Instead I've seen odd route suggestions when recalculating, i.e. the gps unit suggests a detour into some obscure side-road.

Was your route set up with manually inserted via-points or preplanned on the PC? And what district, type of roads and route pereferences were chosen?

The route I rode yesterday was preplanned on a PC, taking me from Basingstoke to Cambridge via back roads. I just asked it to recalculate the route going the quickest way. I would have hoped it would use the waypoints I put in to keep to the backroads.

It did a similar thing in France last year between the Tarn Gorge & Cahors.

Wierd re-routes

The only time my 2610 recalcuated very wierd re-routes was when I'd mistakenly loaded (and mixed) ver 7 & 8 maps from pre-planned PC routes!

Any chance you've done that perhaps!?!

Cheers

Have you included Via points or just the start and end waypoints? If you have included Via points, my guess is that the unit is trying to recalculate the route but is including the Via points which you've already passed through. I would switch the automatic recalculate off or check / ammend your list of Via points if it does recalculate.

Eg last year I had set a route from Northern Poland to Berlin - and had marked the border crossing I wanted to use as a Via point. This worked a treat until I pulled into the first services in Germany and the unit decided that I was off route and would recalculate - the problem was that it still included the original via point ie it was sending me back down the dual carriageway to get to the border. Luckily I realised what it was doing while on the slip road so I could turn round otherwise I would have had a wasted 30 minutes and gone through the Polish border 3 times in one day.

You may not like to hear it, but the chances are that the problem is caused by "human error". :o

I am guessing here.

I assume that you stopped en route somewhere and performed the operation?

I guess the problem is that your device was still running the route, so it did what you asked it to do. It recalculated the whole route, including the stretch you had alreday done. It then assumed that you wanted to go from the start, so it took you to the start.

Trying exiting the route and starting a fresh one from your current (mid route) position. Insert a couple of way points from your original route and ask it to calculate. Don't forget the device will calculate based on the preferences you set up on the device. So, if you, say, had already asked the device to avoid minor (or major) roads it will try to do so as much as possible but still to get you through your waypoints. It's esay to forget to change routing prefrences.

This suggestion may answer the other question posted by F650 Dakar. If his device had been asked to favour small obscure roads then it will do so when recalculating, particularly if he asked it to calculate the most direct (not the fastest) route.

Thanks Chaps,

I did have a number of via points on route, which is probably what confused things.

There's nothing wrong with having Via points - its just that you need to be aware that you will need to remove the Via points you've already been through, if you need to recalculate. Personally, I turn auto-recalculate off. :thumb2

If I've pre-planned a route, I never let the unit re-calculate otherwise it fcuks it up. If you go off route either make your way back, or plot another route to intersect, then start the original pre-planned route again.
