Recalls/Problems with new R1250GS/A

Update.... just had a call from BMW, and they couldnt find any faults with the starting problem and the computer not recorded any error messages, They have reset and recallabrated updated everything so finders crossed....

Fuel cap won't open next,so keep a Torx handy so you can undo the screws!

Just as an aside (btw I had the same issues with my 1250 - new engine fitted at 6k following the death rattle) I’ve been on the yank forum to ask if there had been any issues and was nearly ‘punched out the ring’ by denials that there is anything wrong.

I wasn’t aggressive or armchair warrior about it at all, just shocked with the attitude that I was a sensationalist liar!

LOL.. same here.. with my old 15 bike when the gearbox started playing up... Bloke called Jim Von Baden... Thinks he's God's gift obviously.. told me it was all in my mind, I'm lugging it, it don't happen, turned into a right Troll basicaly.... and the rest joined in!
I now understand my old bike has had a new box fitted... So much for the Yanks then ;)

I had the first of the wc GS's and within a couple of months, realised that I had the worst gear box I'd ever owned in 30 years of biking.

I was met with ridicule, and was told that I didn't know how to change gear .... !!

Yup Beaves, that’s exactly what happened to me.

I felt I was being stoned lol and I can assure you I was my normal unconfrontational self, respectful at all times and not a dick.

Wow did I get stoned lol

So yeah so much for the yanks eh

Bikes just been looked at by BMW and they immediately heard the noise and agreed it definitely wasn’t normal to tick/knock like that. Left hand cylinder has been opened and they’ve found play in a shaft at the bottom (don’t know the name) and also a small amount of backlash in the gears, not a lot but enough that at 820 miles on the clock they wouldn’t expect to see.

even the grade of cheese they use to build these things these days has gone down hill... such a shame!!

Oh gawd . He’s a strange chap

He appears to be an authority on most things on the site in the US... don't question what he knows, but strange how he responded to me saying I had a problem.... very strange

He came on here for a bit, but disappeared quite quickly, once some folk didn’t accept his posts as entirely accurate.

So, the BMW dealer has contacted me. After spending the week back and forth with BMW UK where they were asked to strip the cylinder head off and measure different parts they have determined that from the play found (also on the piston too) that it requires a new engine which is currently being shipped to the dealer. Not sure how I feel about this versus rejecting the bike, but the bike wasn't purchased from this particular dealer so no idea what route I'm going to take.

So I think I have a very similar issue ...ticking noise from left hand side. ..I have added a video with a right and left comparison. Is this the same noise as you had PeeJay ?

Essentially yes. I think mine was slightly louder but that might have been the differences in how the audio is picked up by our phones. There is a video on the previous page of mine but here is someone elses bike at about 16000km:

I had the same problem, the valve guides were loose in the left hand head, this was aswell as numerous other part failures with the bike. I rejected the 3 month old bike. BMW were very helpful and supplied me a brand new bike, it was a very easy process . Unfortunately for me my problems didn't end there. The new bike had a front shock absorber that was leaking by 500 miles from new and on the return from getting it repaired and the 1st service done I broke down with a broken fuel pump. This was followed by 2 more breakdowns. I rejected the 2nd bike and got my money back in full. After 10 years and 6 GSA'S I now gave a KTM 1290. Cracking bit of kit..

As the bike is on PCP the dealer I originally bought it from advised me to contact BMW Financial Services as they couldn't do anything, they then told me they couldn't care less as all they do is finance the bike so currently waiting for a call back from the dealer.

Part of me is inclined to accept the replacement engine, knowing my luck if I reject it and get a replacement bike, it'll have the same flaw and it'll be the same story all over again. You'd hope (but maybe not) that the engine BMW send to replace will be a known good unit.....

The dealership principal, needs to take ownership of the problem. That is what he is paid to do. I know because I'm in the trade. You the customer should be his main priority. BMW UK are very helpful if handled correctly, they know these bikes are having big problems, and if talked to normally but firmly will get things sorted. Good luck my friend. Ps who is the dealership?
