..drives to last for more than a year.
Is it best to close down yer computer at night, or leave it running as I usually do.

I fear computer reliability is going to get worse from now on with our masters' (the EU) ban on lead solder in electronic products . The new solders (tin based?) are not as reliable, more energy hungry (higher melting point), more expensive etc. I heard it will add 10% to manufacturing costs.
So: more broken computers into landfill, more energy consumption. WTF :nenau

i find seagate to be ultra reliable. on at 8am off at midnight every day - no problems. current disks are running like that now for three and a half years. my previous machine did the same for the same period, seagate disks, no problems. new machine coming soon will have seagate disks too.

Get two seagates in a RAID array. When one knackers in, just send it back under the 5yr guarantee. Your data will be secure in the other drive. Sorted.

You may wish to look at the PSU and cooling of your system however. You should be getting much more than 1yr from a drive even if left on 24 7
