recomend me a self inflating mattress

After trying many different mats and air beds over many years with varied success, i bit the bullet and bought a couple of the DLX7 down mats.

Tried them this weekend for the first time, I thought they were fantastic, really comfortable & warm with a small pack size, (i can easily get the two beds, two exped pillows and my tarp in a small ortleib stuff sack)

The built in pump is handy:blast:D

Not cheap though, but Les at Travel Dri did supply 'next day' at a nice price.

All i need now is some rectangular shaped 3 season, down filled sleeping bags and my kit will be sorted for this comming winters camping season:thumb2 (4 season bags are too hot for me)

Have a look at the thermarest ventra down comfoter or alpine 35 down blanket, and fitted sheet.

The sheets fit right onto the exped mat then the down quilt popers onto the sheet, it packs up very small and light, really warm, no drafts.
And the nice thing is the sleeping area is exactly the same size as the matteress so rectangular none of that crappy mummy shape.

Exped all the way!

We tried and tested most in our business – Exped is superior in quality and comfort! Go for it.

That looks ideal! I wonder if the long version would be better with the longer DLX bed?

Is this what you use? IE a recomendation rather than something you just spotted in a mag somewhere?

You've just described my exact sleeping system. Having used the Ventra extensively in Russia, Siberia and Mongolia, it's not as warm as you'd think, good down to about 5C with a hat and fleece. Good for what you'd get on a typical summer night but the down is a bit thin where its needed to be honest. Gonna try the alpine version next because I love the comforter system. But it is very comfy. And one other great thing about the fitted sheet is that it stops you pillow, or whatever you use (bag of clothes) from slipping about.

no not their bed, I use an exped downmat 9 dlx with the large fitted sheet and the down comforter, I find it warm but then I only ever use a softie 6 even in the coldests of winters. if you feel the cold get the alpine 35 not down comforter.
I am actualy tempted with one of the lighter weight blankets, so that I have the option of lightweight, comfoter or both together if its really cold, and as they are only about 30 quid or so I think its worth a go

Yeah the Thermarest tech blanket is a great supplement to the Ventra or instead of the ventra on warm nights. I had the tech blanket but lent it out before my trip. Been using a fleece instead to supplement. But i prefer just one item. I have woken up in a sweat on warmer nights using the Ventra. That's why I'm gonna try the alpine and tech combi. If it's cold I'll have the alpine if I'm freezing my nadz off I can add the tech or if its warm just the tech.

Another Exped convert. If the 'crunching' annoys you (and it doesn't for me) then just bung a sheet over the top

Oh and has anyone mentioned that the best service by far comes from Traveldri Plus?

We all know them as Les and Jane but you get to their online store quicker by googling the company name :D

I personally use the synmat as the down one is too warm for me. I'd get one if I was camping in snow (actually I have done that with the synmat and it was OK if not the warmest night I've had)

DLX for the 6" stature and liking of food which I suffer from. Get the exped inflatable pillow too. Stunning comfort for a small thing. I hate inflatable pillows but borrowed one and immediately bought it.

still looking, i would prefer to "try one" , i dont mean sleep on it but at least have a lie on it before i part with the thick end ......and above of a hundred notes.

called in go outdoors the other day and they have a"high end" self inflater the name of which has escaped me but they refused to let me open and try it...............it was £108

Thanks for the link. Between you and Shep, it looks like I'll be a couple of hundred pounds out of pocket before my next camping trip :( :thumb

Hi lads,

Just an update , after much point and airing , I've bought an alpkit fat airic '

Its a self inflating mattress that's 8cm thick , its landed today and having only put it up in the house first impressions are good ,
Takes a good few puffs to get it firm enough but its great for me, I'm 6 ft and around 16st , enough room so I'm not hanging off it and and cant feel the floor when laid down .
Guess my first camping trip with it will decide if its good enough .

After reading all different threads on what to buy i still could'nt make my mind up. The standard ones may be ok for your average size but i found them to narrow , give Alpkit a ring and explained my situation to them and they recommended the wideboy, http://www.alpkit.com/sleeping-mats , if i did'nt like it they would have taken it back for a refund, Tried it on a recent long weekend to Ireland and must admit it is a fantastic peice of kit and packs up quite small. Well worth the £40 :beerjug:

Just got an e mail from Amazon advertising the Aerobed Pakmat. Anybody got one of these? Or knows how they perform? doesnt look too bad for £44
