recomend me a self inflating mattress

After a brief dalliance with the self-inflating mats and suffering expensive punctures, bought a £4.99 Argos "manually inflated" mattress - 6 inches thick and gives you a bit of a work-out setting up camp, but dead comfy and not likely to break the bank.

Here's a question

I normally use a straight forward single airbed (the full matress type). It gives me the best night's sleep, costs little and packs away smaller than foam filled. Very reluctant to change. However, on colder nights, it allows the ground to suck away my body heat (even though I use a Snugpak 3 bag). I have it in mind to put a foil survival blanket (you know, the metalised thin sheet) under the matress. Anyone tried this? Does it work?

Anything that reflects the heat back toward you will work to a degree.

Agreed but you need more insulation to stop heat escaping. SLeepign bags aren't brilliant on the bottom as you compress and insulation with your body.

You can get bags that have no insulation on the bottom, just a big pocket for a mat. Saving weight too :-)

Yeah, read on another forum that under the mattress does very little. Over the mattress works better, but slippage would be the problem.

Winfields in Measham are selling Vango cotton fitted sheets purpose made for airbeds reduced from £20 to £7 (double size). They weigh nothing and pack down real small. Get one of those and put you foil blanket underneath that to keep it in place on top of your airbed and to trap heat more effectively.

Use the sheet in the summer to sleep on under an opened up sleeping bag in the form of a duvet, or if it's really hot just sleep under the sheet :thumb

I use one of those roll-up picnic rugs with a waterproof side (£5 from your local supermarket) under a bog standard blow up matress. Works fine. Newspaper will do as well, its all about putting a layer of insulation between the matress and tyhe colder ground.

+ 1 for an Alpkit Wideboy ( just got one)
miles better than an Exped Synmat 7 weighs under a kilo too!

It's a nightmare.

Torn between

Exped down 9 lw

Exped 7 lw

Exped Mega mat 10 lxw.

Going to make a fleece blanket, and hopefully fashion a comforter/quilt that I can fasten to the blanket.

I can't find any that fit the larger mats.

I like the idea of been able to fasten the quilt to the blanket if it's cold or have it loose if it's warm.

Thought about that Si, but a bit of a faff. Thinking about a ride over to Alpkit (nr Nottingham) in the week. Want to take a look at their "Dozer" mat. You free any day?

Yep I looked at them, to narrow for me though, I would end up rolling off it. If you go on a weekend I wouldn't mind coming.

Just taken delivery of an "Exped megamat 10" covered it with a Dunelm mattress cover.

I kid you not,it's as good as been in bed :thumb

Got one ready for 2013, will check out Dunelm cover.
Cheers ;)

That Megamat 10 looks awsome. It doesn't pack away small does it? However, it looks cheaper than a downmat 9
