I've come up with the idea of keeping in touch with mrs ralphy by Skype for my trips abroad (text from Egypt £1.60 each  ) & to complete the audio/visual treat I need a web-cam for my laptop.

As trying to communicate with the 'sales' assistants at my local PC World is to me proof that there is a hell :spitfire I would appreciate a recommendation from the knowledgeable ones on here :thumb

Ralphy....there are webcams specifically for laptops but they're very small and plasticky........I must admit I haven't tried one but I really suspect they'd be a bit crap....you need a decent lens, a decent sensor and a decent microphone and those tend to be in 'proper' sized cams which aren't big anyway.

I use a Logitech Quickcam Pro4000 which is very very good...as long as the connection's good, the sound is better than mobile phone quality and the picture is crystal clear even at full screen resolution.

It comes with a good set of software and it was a very simple P&P installation (USB2)

The camera body itself is a bit smaller than a tennis ball and you get two bases, one a solid frame and the other a bendy one that you can bend onto the screen flap of a laptop.

Thoroughly recommended :thumb
