Brrrr.. winter 'tis here :(

Can anyone recommend a winter base layer? I'm toying with idea of the Rukka Toast but can't see any sort of reviews. Anyone have/use, or have any other thermal/warm base layer to recommend?

Cheers,
Rob :thumb

I agree. I've been a big convert to merino wool clothing over the last few years. My make of choice is Smartwool, but Icebreaker is similar. The base layer T-shirts are excellent as are the mid ones. The talk about them not needing so much washing is not hype either. A days exercise in a standard "wicking" base layer and it certainly needs a wash... the wool ones seem fine!
Top of the pile are the socks. Sooooo snug!

Another vote for Icebreaker.

I have a light weight T, a mid weight T and a mid weight long sleeve. Using them singularly and in combination I have summer/winter covered.

Oh, and it really is true that they don't get pongy, great for long trips when you don't want to carry much gear.

I rather like the Helly Hansen thermals.

Thin and effective. They work as a good base layer when its this time of year.

Hi Rob,

Have a look at: http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3253463&postcount=12

To be frank, the synthetics / synthetics and wool mixes (Helly Hansen, for example) are good, too.

Anything sold for skiing, rock climbing, running, yachting will probably do you.

I prefer the ones with a 6" zip at the neck, whilst others prefer a turtle or polo-type neck. But that's just a personal choice.

I use mine summer and winter, T-shirt or long sleeved, according to temperature, layering (or not) on top.

Leggins, much the same story. I have Helly Hansen's of two different TOG (or whatever they call it) ratings. Great in winter or in very hot weather, particularly under leathers but just as good under a textile suit, too.

Things to look out for, if possible:

(1) External seams, are good as they save rubbing.

(2) Fit. This seems obvious but it is important in the neck area, which bods often forget. You don't want it too tight or, worse, so bulky that you cannot get other layers on top, then your Buff and still do the jacket collar up.

(3) How well the fabric stretches is something to have a gander at. Many have some sort of 'stretch' polymer built into the weave, which is a plus.

(4) How quickly they wash and dry. Most are now very good. The wool and synthetics being a big improvement on plain old cotton or crude sheep's wool.

Have a look at several in a shop like Cotswold or Millets or whatever and see if you can try on before buying. It saves a lot of time and effort in the long run, trust me. If you can stretch to it, the Merino wool ones are great.

PS For real all-day cold*, little beats an electric waistcoat or underjacket. Pricey though and watch that it doesn't draw more than 5 Amps on first turning on, or you'll trip your CanBus out..... or fit a relay... or go straight to the battery via a suitable fuse.

* or even that March pre-dawn hour dash down the motorway to the Chunnel.

I'm loving the set of M&S "Heatgen" Thermals I have. They are essentially a Helly Hanson Lifa rip off, but I got the set for £20 in the local M&S Superstore. I wear them inside out because they do have a ribbed seam, so the seam is then not rubbing.

Wiggle have some good stuff, as the cycling stuff works really well on the motorised bicycle

Have a look at Mountain Warehouse Merino wool tops / bottoms from £24.99 CLICK ME

Or they are doing a BOGOF offer on these tops / bottoms (they are getting good reviews) CLICK ME

Thanks for all of the replies.. most helpful ;)

Looking at Icebreaker socks now on t'internet...

... and am off to try an EVO2 heated waiscoat later this week to see how that works out. They do 'XL' and 'XXL', I just need them to do 'FB' :thumb

Also in particular Mr Wapping, cheers for taking the time for that detail. Good sense, thank you.

I can tell you that is a system that most definitely does work  :D

FWIW I had a heated waistcoat for several years and it was great, no complaints at all.

Then, a couple of years ago a heated Aerostitch fleece came up for sale on here and.........wow..........it's even better! Having your arms kept toasty warm along with your trunk makes quite a difference :thumb2

a merino wool base layer is the best investment you could ever buy, ive been wild camping, mountain biking and walking for days on end for the last 12 years or so in mine, still as good as new, odourless even after a few days on the hills and very comfortable, smartwool and icebreaker seem to be the top brands.

pound for pound, yes I believe the 'expensive' stuff is sh1te, hence it is sh1te IMO

Anything else to add? :D

got any aldi stuff have you? :D

+1 for merino wool. I was a HH lifa fan boy for years until I tried the wool. Choose a make to suit your pocket but definitely merino wool.
