Recommend me a Base Layer Set?

(unless you are an inverted snob of course, in which case one may be tempted with big named sh1te)

I fear you may have your understanding 'inverted snobbery', inverted.

the attitude of seeming to despise anything associated with wealth or social status, while at the same time elevating those things associated with lack of wealth and social position.

+1 on the merino stuff, providing its 100% merino and no added polyester.
got base and mid layers, and its so good. Got mine from a place in Wales - Howies.
I don't have any qualms with using the Aldi stuff - providing its 100% Merino. After all, they don't make it , they just sell it ... I've got a couple of their 'bamboo' T shirts -VERY comfortable, wash and wear well.

Icebreaker is the dog's.....Even though its all made of NZ Merino, but manufactured in China somewhere......

Have a look at Chocolate Fish...All made with the same NZ Merino but the difference being is thats all Kiwi made..:thumb2:thumb2

Blood good stuff and not too costly

Finistere make good merino base layers, U.K company, made in Portugal. The best socks I've found are mountain toesters, U.K. made, sold by Terra Nova.
I'm usually only tempted when stuffs in the sale or on special offer.....

Lowe Alpine base layers, 10 years nigh on daily use all year round and still keep going.

Only trouble is, you can't buy any of their gear until 2013, plus they've not made anything for the past few years :-(

Lowe Alpine "Dri-Flow" (I think). Used three seasons for last number of years - really good at regulating temperature and not allowing you to sweat in the warmer weather, yet acting as a good base for layering in colder climes. :thumb

Could this be a plot spoiler as to the next ramble? Are you going to see Father Christmas Rob?:D

Woolpower. The best by far, and cheaper than Icebreaker. Note too that these days Icebreaker actually has a really low percentage of merino in it.

http://www.woolpower.se/en/default.asp If you look at it, make sure the one you try is not too tight, they work better when they are a little loose, not baggy, just a relaxed fit. Outdoor shops like Tamarack sell it, it's not a "mainstream" product as such, it's fairly specialised. Mid range price wise too, it's good value for merino stuff and lasts a long time.

http://www.thermalshop.co.uk/ is a great online supplier, the factory shop for EDZ clothing mentioned by others above.

Some good stuff in their SALE

I've been very happy with the EDZ All Season stuff - as it says, I wear it all year under cordura or leather clothing.

So EDZ proclaimers - any comments on back length? I have short legs, long back and have found that a lot of stuff just isn't long enough - I have heard rumours that EDZ is particularly skimmy length wise with its tops. Anyone like to say different (bearing in mind the cost I would really like EDZ stuff to be ok).

Its on the short side.

I've a couple of short sleeve tops, and they are deffo short

Good Deals

Went into my local "Mountain Warehouse" yesterday and picked up 2 100% merino wool base layer tops, with zip neck, reduced to £24.99 from £34.99.

Tried 1 for the first time today on Wapping's rememberance day run, and I was warm and toasty.

Go and try some on.

Only you will know if it fits you.

Any suggestions on where I could do that ? I am based in Sevenoaks but work in Eastbourne, and regularly travel to Cambridge, so just about anywhere in the South East is viable for me to visit.

Mountain Warehouse in Cambridge, is downstairs from Cotswold.
About a 3 min walk from the market square

EDZ stuff will probably be either at the NEC show, or a friendly dealer/stockist
