Sumvision Cyclone, cheap, silent and plays anything I throw at it in 1080P

There are a few different versions, Wi-Fi / built in drives etc, but this does it for me, plugged into GB Ethernet it streams from my NAS box / Windows PC perfectly and you can plug in a USB drive and play direct from that.

Apple TV 2 jailbroken running XBMC

Or

Acer Revo (R3610 or R3700) running OpenElec XBMC

Or

Raspberry Pi running OpenElec XBMC

Got these at home running via Cat6 all pointing to a QNAP NAS with movie collection and TV Show collection.

Depends what and where from you want to stream. If its love film or Netflix type deal then a PS3 would get my vote. I don't own any games for it but its a hell of a good DVD, bluray, video player.

I would tend to agree - I have a PS3 and apple TV in Germany,. The PS3 is a tad noisy mind - but does everything it needs to do

All of the above, plus also use mine for streaming video, music, photos from a QNAP NAS running Twonky :beerjug:

I have an Apple TV and from reading this I don't use it for half of its potential. I use it to stream my itunes from the imac and iphoto but no other files, bit of youtube, watching my Vimeo videos of our little girl ocassionally and thats it.
It seems some people are using Apple Tvs as storage devices too , didnt even know you could do that . Maybe its because I was an early adopter and only have a Gen 1 or perhaps because I am an IT numpty.

You could be correct on most of the above points --except the storage potential of the Apple TV, be it Gen 1,2 or 3 - as i read the spec sheet there is no hard drive/storage capacity within the Apple unit :nenau and at £99 that sort of confirms that.

Twonky,XMBC,Raspeberry, Revo,PS3,Netflix,HULU, --- i'm lost:eek:

The original Apple TV was bigger, more expensive, and contained a hard drive.

I had one but sold it as it was very much underpowered for HD.

I think they seem to use them to somehow record programs by hooking them up to a cheap HDD. You can buy 250GB for under £30 retail so although Apple don't include it for £99 they easily could.

No storage on an apple TV 2
But that's what the PC is for ...

PS3 would be my recommendation then. I use it to stream from Servio within the house and it works well. I have a couple of Terra bytes of video, music and photos on the network via that. I cant think of any reason it wont work for Twonky and of course it does the physical disk and the internet streaming such as iPlayer, Lovefilm and netflix to name a few. If your in the market for a new TV then something like a Samsung or most other smart TV's will do the same barring of course the physical disk.

I looked at new TVs recently and some of the smart TVs have the necessary firmware/software to record TV shows so again you just need to plug in a cheap HDD via USB and away you go.

I had mixed experience with my PS3, it is very particular about the format and bitrate of content to be streamed to it. At least half of the stuff I have to watch can't be viewed via the PS3.

Consequently I use a Synology NAS as the storage/download device with which to stream saved content. I stream it wirelessly from my NAS directly via my wireless router to an Apple TV2 which is jailbroken. It has no issues at all with playing any and all of my downloaded content, ripped files etc etc.

I can also view the media content on my NAS through iPad/Iphone via a simple downloadable APP from synology, no doubt other brands of NAS have a similar set up.
