That will fit in that little compartment where the 14mm or 13mm bolt holds the starter motor in situ..:blast

Feck do they do it on purpose to make life difficult ? Surely it would of make more sense to bolt it on from the other side somehow, thus giving a little spanner spece. :nenau

Nothing I've got will go near the little bar steward.,

Think I'll have to purchase a thin wall mini socket set.

Stupid design

Replace those starter bolts in the airbox ( those are the ones you mean ?) with Allen Head bolts, and then just use a small ratchet with a short length of sawn-off Allen Key of appropriate size. Easy - removed my airbox the other day in a couple of minutes!

No its the little 13mm that holds the starter in place (on my 80 Basic) I'm fitting a better starter keep the Valeo as a spare.
The bolt is in a tiny box section of the casing .
I'm nipping out for a mini thin wall socket set. :D

13mm 1/4" drive and you should be able to get it. I use a blue point one from the snap on man
If you remove the air box it makes life much easier

Have you tried a standard 3/8" drive socket and wrench?

If you need to buy any tools I can recommend Halfords Professional. Quarateed for life and good value especially if bought with a trade card or in their frequent sales.

Don't waste your money on SnapOn.

Cheers all.

Did it with a thin wall 13mm any tiny wrench .

Halfords professional.

Not me the tools. :D

All done now.
Thinking of upgrading my 80 Basic with the Nippen Denso instead of the Valeo I've taken off as a spare.
They're a lot of dosh 286.00 fom Motorworks but I think they are a fit and forget.

I find most snap on tools very good, it would be weird to just dismiss them on cost alone, the Halfords professional range of sockets are also quite good though, i agree.

I had nearly all my professional Snap On tool kit stolen from my (then) lock up rented garage. I replaced about 75% with Halfords professional, and some more Snap On, and the Halfords is totally OK for professional use and of very good quality indeed. Good pricing too.

Roger Chatterton is right, replace the ones in the Airbox with Cap screws and the ones that hold the starter as well, one of the first jobs on a new Airhead!

Bergen tools are fantastic value for money.

As a pro mechanic ive a bit of a tool fetish, have a good range of snap on stuff but find Bergen hand tools just as good.

Buy from ebay

A 13mm swivel head socket spanner. Absolutely perfectly made for the job of removing those two hidden starter motor bolts with no room around them :D . Kamasa do a set 8mm-19mm, pointless paying stupid money on specific tools that are only useful once every couple of years

If you are setting up your first tool kit for working on motorcycles then buy a good 3/8" socket set rather than a 1/2"square drive. Also treat yourself to a set of 3/8" wobble bar extensions.

3/8" will get into far more places than the bulkier 1/2" socket sets.
