Looking for a way out
I have decided I can't live with the BMW vario topbox (which I bought new :blast). Its just too small. I think the whole "expandablity" thing looks rather cleverer than it actually it.

Any recommendations? I was thinking. GIVI TREKKER CASE 58L

Agree about the Trekker 52. Only downside, and this is a personal preference, is that you cannot leave it unlocked - so I leave key in all the time and remove it when I leave the bike. Another advantage is that it can be transferred to different makes and models of bike, just needing a mounting plate. I like the look aswell...!

Just make sure, that the pannier lids clear it. I have givi maxima and you have to unlock both ends of the aluminium panniers.

I read, somewhere, it can be also keyed to the bmw ignition key, hopefully someone more knowledgeable can confirm this.

How much do you want to spend? SW Motech metal top case (can be black) fits a full face helmet.

Are you need that for the Exmoor beer supplies then, Jim?

That would double up as a helicopter landing pad a treat in an emergency.

I use the Trekker 58 top box, its very good. I find that now i don't need the panniers much as the box takes so much stuff. I leave mine locked but open so i just chuck stuff in and go.

Actually, you can leave the Trekker Outback unlocked with out the need for the key to be inserted. If you have top opening panniers, I would advise the smaller of the two Trekker Outback Topboxes as the lids won't foul it.

I have the 58ltr Trekker with BMW ally panniers. You cannot hinge open the panniers as they hit the underside of the top box. Saying that, I just release both catches on the pannier and place the lid on the seat.
It does look a tad unwieldy without the panniers, but ok with them on.
It takes two helmets plus loads of other stuff too.

I'm happy with mine.............. recommended !

Smaller Trekker Givi Recommended - 1 lid but room for other stuff too.

Top Box

I use a 52L Givi on my XR but the rack/plate that the box fits to has a sticker stating that the maximum weight that it should support is 6KG. Considering the box must weigh at least 1KG, by the time you carry a big D lock it doesnt leave much carrying capacity remaining.

Coming back from France however, I got a bit carried away in the duty free shop and overloaded it without a problem

Why there's a 6KG limit I don't know
