a B&W laser printer similar to the Samsung ProXpress M3320ND (35x25x 37cm) which I currently have ( and not physically larger either!!)
Must haves are high quality option (4000 dpi) as well as eco and duplex printing small size preferred.
If it could print via Bluetooth as well as a usb cable that would be good- I do not have a network

a Colour laser which does the above (no inkjets)
and why do you favour them?

Trying to narrow the field but so many- Xerox? HP?
Am leaning towards to Xerox C230 A4 Colour Laser Printer
Max budget mid 300ish inc vat

You could very easily have a network without needing it to be connected to the internet.

I've got some spare routers kicking around somewhere which you would be welcome to if that helps.

Xerox stuff is generally good. I've got a B230 which does duplex but doesn't have the resolution you would want. The C230 is essentially the colour equivalent and that's a very good price for a colour laser!

I'd love to be able to send a file either from my android phone or win10 laptop without wires but have the option for a usb connection when all goes tits up!
Sheesh- didn't realise that colour cartridges are soooooooo expensive- more than a new printer
and what is the difference between wireless, network and where does bluetooth come into it? arrrgh I'm hopeless at printers. The older I get the more I know about the less I know!

yes, Xerox bought some very good colour technology from Tektronic just before they made me redundant and closed the UK factory in Gloucestershire. It is much better than anything they had developed themselves.

they are also very good at providing kit at reasonable prices and getting their investment back via consumables. I would be checking replacement toner prices and see if there are 3rd party sources for toner

In simple terms, networks normally have two parts. The Wide Area Network (WAN) is the part that connects to the internet and the world at large and the Local Area Network (LAN) which connects all of your devices at home to the router.

So, you can set up a router that broadcasts a WiFi signal so you can connect all your LAN devices to it - even if it's not connected to the WAN

So your printer connects to the router via WiFi and any other device on the WiFi network (phone, laptop, tablet or whatever) can communicate to the printer via the WiFi provided by the router.

Does that make sense?

It's really pretty easy in reality. There are bound to be 'how to' guides on this somewhere...

very good point on the cost of the toner v the cost of the printer....

I print so infrequently that it's not really a consideration for me. I think I've only ever changed one toner cartridge in my last three laser printers!

I have a Pantum (Amazon own brand I think) mono laser, bought a decade ago, still on the original toner. Until I retired I usually had access to a colour laser printer at work for anything that was not urgent.

When the Pantum runs out of toner, it will probably be replaced for a new one as things like the paper grippers go brittle with age and it probably would not last another toner cartridge. I'm still only half way through a ream of paper I took from Xerox when I left in 2002!

thanks for that chaps- methinks I'll stick to the mono laser and a usb lead- being an advocate for the KISS principle! but thanks Fil for offer of the gubbins!
Funny enough I've brought back to life my 'traction/feed' wheels (which were making streaks on the paper) with white spirit and cleaned where the paper goes - and it has produced a clean, crisp print.
Simple trick and it works but just don't use a fluffy cloth (DAMHIK) as it took awhile to get rid of those 'hairs'- Bounty roll paper perfect.
So it looks like a Xerox- but which one? why does this feel like a 'which oil' thread?... come to think of it...
