.... a pair of boots bearing the following in mind:

Just want a plain black year round touring boot that's waterproof and ideally doesn't have zips. My current pair are by Hein Gericke, have covered over 50,000 miles and are knackered. They're a great design with laces underneath the front flap but sadly they've been discontinued.

Comfort and the need to be waterproof are more important than price.

Just had to return a pair of Altbergs, that I went to Richmond to be measured up for, as they were too tight round my calves, in fact I could only just do the zip up and that was without my leathers on. They offered to custom make me a pair but my current books are totalled so sadly I don't have the time to wait for a pair to be made :(

Been to Rainbow today and tried a pair of Santiagos which were just not generous enough around the calf, they may have loosened up but they were just too tight to take a chance with £210 :augie Also tried the BMW touriong boots but they too were on the tight side in addition to not really being to my taste.

Shortly I'm off out for a pint and a curry with my Dad so I'll see what the assembled brains of UKGSer come up with on my return.

errr . . . why did you go for Altbergs with azip then?
I've got 2 pairs and neither have Zip.

I went to the shop to get measured up, had a good look and they were the type I preferred. Usually I don't go for zips. Which Altbergs have you got?

Oxtar Infinity GTX :thumb2

Unlikely that they're going to fit around the calves if he struggled with the BMW Santiagos which are essentially the same boot.

Yes, Altberg Clubman Classics would have offered a greater range of fit, particularly around the calves.

I have used a pair of AlpineStars for years. I use then all through winter and they are warm and comfortable with excellent feel.

Okay, they have zips but they are 100% waterproof and breathable (goretex). The zips have never caused a problem. The equivalent today is the SMX-5 and I am considering buying a set of these to replace the old boots, but not for a while...

+1 for the Alpinestars but not the SMX 5.

I had 2 pairs of Sidi Evo rains which were supremely comfortable, they were discreet when worn under jeans and were great for walking when off the bike but they were never 100% waterproof. Then I switched to Alpinestars touring Goretex boot 3 yrs ago bought for £149 from Hein Gericke Chester.

Fab boot , not as light weight as the Evo Rain, slightly bulkier somehow but still eminently comfortable with better shin protection, in fact generally better protection allround. They are also warmer than the Evo Rain so better for winter riding but can be a little warm in the height of summer, normally only a problem if abroad. The best bit is they have never leaked, the worst bit is the sole on the left boot has now worn quite noitceably and I think i'll have to replace them with another pair next year .

Here is the '09 version :thumb2

Clubman Classic and (Continental?) Tourer. Both very comfortable and completely waterproof.
The latter were cut with Aquatex and cost £116.24 in 2004.
(got big calves myself)

I'd forgotten about these. I had a pair of Alpinestars waterproof boots before my current pair. I'll take a look but thus far top of the list :thumb

Daytona roadstar gtx

Not cheap but the best boots i have ever owned, never leaked and comfortable from the word go

You will find them on this page

And I like these too :)

A trip to Chester beckons Charlie Williams stock the Daytonas and Hein Gericke for the Alpinestars.

I'll let you know what I end up with.

TCX Infinity Goretex.

Got a pair last winter and really very happy, tested on winter and summer conditions and legs always dry.

:beerjug:

As I mentioned up the thread a bit I was under the impression that they were basically the same boot as the BMW Santiago and they were too tight around my calves so would guess these would be similar.

Hein Gericke Rallye GTX II ... mine have done 9k miles since Sept 08 and I've been chuffed to bits with them. I think the styling is a bit marmite (love it/hate it) but I've used them winter and summer and my feet have stayed bone dry in all weathers (Goretex). Soles and upper have worn well and I like the additional protection given by their height. No zips, just a large velcro tab at the top and three ratchet clips. Fit nicely under Textiles and go over leather trousers too.

Another vote for these. I have had mine for more years than I can remember , somewhere between 7 and 10 to be sure. At 24K miles a year they have knocked up over 168,000 miles, and teher is no sign of needing replacement

I had the soles replaced by Daytona 2 years ago, apart from that they have never needed attention apart from cleaning. Comfortable off the bike, wore them for a few days at Glast08, and they scrub up fine. The ankle is adjustable for various sizes, so may fit where it sounds like others are inflexible.

The only apparent leak I have had in them was a result of leaking spray coming up the the ankle of boot then pentertating from the top down, due to worn velcro on my trouses.

There are other boots just as good, and probably even better; but, due to the long life and perfect record of my Daytonas, I have had no reason to find out what they might be :aidan
