Anyone got any good recommendation for underwear that makes long journeys more comfortable. I've been thinking of buying a pair of cycling shorts, but wondered if anyone could recommend anything better.

Serious replies only please Guys

Awww.... this could have been soooo funny !

I find simple cotton breifs without bulky seams to be quite comfy and a pair of long johns if a little cold !(under the leathers of course) :thumb2 but Im sure youre going to get a lot of exotic suggestions !

Merino wool products are great and would suit long journeys fine.

Merino wool naturally adjusts to suit climate, remains warm when wet, ultra soft, lightweight, highly breathable, easy care, easy packable, non creasing and the big bonus, naturally odour free.

I have merino wool stuff by:
Icebreaker (zip top & long johns)
Merrell (mediumweight s/s T-shirt)
Craighoppers (lightweight l/s T-shirt)
Trekmates (lightweight s/s T-shirt and liner Gloves),
SealSkinz (waterproof socks)
Go-Outdoors (explorer socks)

Icebreaker stuff is the best, but the dearest.

Not got any underwear but Icebreaker appear do quite a few different products

With a decent saddle it doesn't matter whether you wear cycling shorts or split crutch panties... in my experience.
Just make sure the seams don't rub any 'senistive' parts:thumb

I wouldn't use cycling shorts as such under my bike kit. However, I do have a couple of pair of cycling undershorts which have an artificial "chamois" pad in them. The best of these are very lightweight but I bought them in REI in the USA.

Get a decent seat - there's loads of places that'll re-upholster your seat or you could buy one or you could get something like a sheepskin or an Airhawk.

Try TK Maxx for thermal base layers, look in the ski section (at the appropriate time of year). I have a couple of sets that work well and were pretty cheap - this stuff can be really expensive from specialist shops.

It might matter to those with whom you share a room on your travels though. :barf

OK

What distance are long journeys?

Getting a comfortable seat is a good start. Lots of options out there, increasing in price.

(a) A sheepskin cover.

(b) An Airhawk.

(c) A complete replacement seat. A Sargent for example.

You have to get around two problems. Wicking away sweat and the fabric rucking up. You can have the finest silk knicks but they won't work if your trousers (not your undercrackers) are creasing up, creating pressure points.

My chosen apparel are cheap cotton boxers from M&S. Lots of Victor Silvester, you see*.

*Plenty of ballroom.

I`ve got an Airhawk and it`s excellent for reducing the hotspots that make the seat uncomfortable after a while. If you don`t like it its easily enough sold on :thumb2

I have a couple of pairs of Nike antibacterial lycra running shorts. Similar to cycling shorts but without the chamois pad. Flat seams, so no chafing, and very comfortable. The antibacterial bit is a mystery, but after wearing them for some long hot days for a couple of weeks with lmited washing they were still odour-free. (sorry if that's too much information. :D)
Based on the sucess of these, I bought some undershirts in the same material by "Under Armour". One long sleeved and one short sleeve, which I wear under my body armour for off-roading. Again, these have proved to be very good.
For colder weather, I just layer these with ski wear.

Icebreaker underwear.....man that must be some serious kit !!:eek

you get what you pay for I guess. I would agree that Ice breaker is the best for wearing under your jacket and trousers. Been wearing the stuff for years and will swear by it.:clap

Made with in New Zealand with New Zealand Merino wool:thumb2...not that I'am bais in any way mind you.;)

There's a firm called Ussen that do a good line in thermals. Unlike smelly Hellys their thermals feel more like cotton and are certainly comfortable for a good time. Try Googling 'Fell and Mountain Accrington' cause I know they supply them (and often have end-of-season cheapies)

Lot of long distance riders in the US swear by LD Comfort riding underwear - have a pair of the riding shirts and are the most comfortable undies I have worn on a bike, but not cheap! http://www.ldcomfort.com/
