SWMBO is working in the big smoke for a few weeks and I've recently volunteered for redundancy :eek, so I may as well nip down there for a few days free accommodation, as a break from seeking a career change :D

Ain't been to Lahndahn for years. At the risk of sounding like a total hick wandering round with straw hanging out my gob, I always liked the 'vibe' and just wandering about, but what should I be sure to take in (cheaper the better) ?

Off the top of my head, I fancy:
the Da Vinci exhibition thing that's only around til February;
the V&A;
British Museum;
British Library;
That big wheel thing (wossit called again?) - anyone know where I can get cheap tickets ?
What's the number of that normal bus service (possibly a circular route?) that used to go past tons of the major sights, maybe in he Routemaster buses - I'm sure I read there was a plan to axe it but there was also a fight to save it - not sure if it succeeded or not :nenau

I like to think I'm fairly broad minded in the culinary stakes, but I am not eating jellied eels under any circumstances :barf :flag

Forget ...

... Da Vinci; all bookable tickets are sold out and mahoosive queues for 'on the day' sales :mad:

I'd like to do the Imperial War Museum, the Science Museum, HMS Belfast and have a go on a new Routemaster - but that's just me!

Right give the wheel a miss unless it's a clear day
Go to the monument walk up but great views still fraction of the price muchore old London
Night time walk through the temple and around st James
Still gas lit lamps very atmospheric
I think route masters run no 9 route straight through west end to the city
Ken had the all re engined to euro 3 then scrapped most of them :blast
British museum is a must if you like architecture from over the world
Stable market Camden for bohemian experience
Cafe eating st christophers pl if it's warm enough
Don't forget a ride in a London cab never know it may be me
Oh nearly forgot if your going to the Belfast as siwhite suggested
walk from Westminster along the south bank pst national theatre
Klink, golden hind, southwark cathedral hays galleria one of my favourite ways to spend a day in town
Unless I've got a flyer from one of the Mayfair hotels

Using Dazzles info above you can also :

St Paul's Cathederal
Wobbly Bridge
Tate Modern
Borough Market
Market Porter Pub :beer:
Southwark Cathederal
See the new Shard building
Thames River Bus down to Greenwich to Cutty Sark, National Maritime Museum, Greenwich Park, Greenwich Market, places to eat.
London Dungeons
Clink Prison
Vinopolis, if you like wines.
Tower Bridge
A circular walk from London Bridge to Westminster will bring in a lot of sights and off-shoots for you.
IMAX cinema at Waterloo.

Go on one of the sightseeing buses - goes from St Paul's so you can have a rest after a long day out.

If you fancy a pub crawl in oldie-worldie pubs around Fleet Street then let me know and I can give you the details. About 8 pubs all within a mile radius. Nice ales!. For historical reasons you understand.

Saatchi gallery is worth a peak. Exhibits change every few months - takes about an hour. British Museum is a true testament to centuries of the Empire plundering treasures from all over the world. The Lamp Tavern on Lambs Conduit Street ten minute walk other side of Russell Square has good plonk and has original Victorian architecture and many cool shops and restaurants for afterwards.

A nice big fry up at the Ace Cafe, and see what meets are there in the evening.

In the same order:-

Da Vinci.... No chance.... Or start queuing round about now.

Museums are all open. HMS Belfast is shut, I walked past it today. Looks like maintenance.

The big wheel is the London Eye. Standard cost tickets are not priced at life changing levels.

The bus route you are probably thinking of is the 15 http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/gettingaround/maps/buses/pdf/toweroflondon-2261.pdf It takes in many of the City and West End sites and runs with the old Route Masters on it, alongside regular buses. The route is not circular though; that is the independent Big Bus Company with their hop-on-hop-off circular route.

Miss out Tubby Isaac's at Aldgate, is my advice.

excellent stuff - thanks for all suggestions. Was planning to do my usual pre trip poke around on trip advisor and the like, but no need now methinks - you lot have given me more than enough to ponder for a short visit :clap

Really quite fancied the DaVinci thing but big Qs etc could be a PITA :( Forewarned is forearmed, though :)

Will wade through the replies later today. :thumb2

Londinium

Also if your an Urdi or swaheli speaker you'll find it a big help, if you see another white man it could possibly be Michael Palin!.

I'm there on Friday and am going to Denamrk Street with my Lad :comfort

Browsing only. :toungincheek

A walk through the old inns off fleet st - it's like stepping back in time.

Science Museum and Natural History museum are givens.

Go and spend half an hour stood outside St Pancras station admiring the brickwork.

thanks again for all suggestions - some of which have been adopted.

Anyone recommend any eateries in the Canary Wharf area ? Focus on decent grub, rather than it being 'posh' FWIW :thumb2

Don McCullin, Photography Exhibit. in Imperial War Museum. www.iwm.org.uk
I'm very keen to see this myself.

Also - Greenwich Observatory for the architecture, location and the views as much as the content. Bit of a trek to get to though.

Tasty and cheap enough with pleasant quiet surroundings about 10 mins ride from Canary Wharf! Be aware that it is only open 10-5pm Tues - Sunday.
