What mods have you tried and what would you recommend?

I have tried the following;

Mudsling
Front fender extender
Front alloy engine guard
cylinder protectors (plastic)
Engine bars
GSA screen
Winglets
Radiator protector
Headlight protector
Headlight cowl (to stop reflections off the protector)
Frame plug
Remap

I am sure there are a few other bits and pieces but with few exceptions I am very pleased with the additions - but most I could live without.

I have had first hand experience of a full system on the older GS's and this adds a bit to the performance - Remus and Laser seemed very nice and were obviously louder than standard but there are lots of good reviews of the Remus headers put there already.

My must haves are a better screen, headlight and radiator protectors and the mudsling - and for a feel of security some cylinder protectors or engine bars, as they are easy to topple over on the rough stuff.

So... what mods have you tried? What was your experience? & most importantly, what would you recommend, or class as essential?

not much missing from your list , a useful add on for me was mirror extensions, raise and move the mirrors out a few inches, imo i found these really useful as with the standard mirrors i felt i was leaning down to see properly.

Must admit the mirrors is one thing I hadn't thought about - I've always had to move a little to see in the mirrors from riding sports bikes for years, so not noticed it as much - but I'd imagine on long rides it would make the whole experience that much more relaxed.

Along with most of your list of mods, my first priority was to throw the stupid rear mudguard thing as far as I could throw it................

After that the more important things........................

50watt HID lighting..................I ride it a lot at night,

Removal of the Cat............in my case a Remus system,

Sargent seat...............for me a mega improvement along with realigning the seat and bars,

North American market screen..................another mega improvement,

Painting the black side panels to match the proper colour............it's an 07 model

Ice Hockey puck on the bottom of the side stand..............to make it sit up better,

Kaoko cruise control device..................use it a lot,

Replacement of stupid torx bolts with proper machined stainless cap screws etc.

Had it from new, love it to bits, keeping it 'til I can't ride it anymore!

Try the mirrors from the 800GS. That was the best £50 I've spent.

+1 for mirrors bought of eBay £23 plus thread adapter £4 bargain

+1 on the HUD light. I would also add a quick action throttle. Tried one for the first time this year and wished I had added this years ago. Also added the go cruise throttle lock.....£10 easier to use and safer than the usual bar end locks.

I've heard that the 800 GS mirrors are the major cause of the head bearing failures on the 800.

We don't need anymore problems with the 1200 do we.

I forgot, I have a Camel Toe on the side stand.

Right - bits needed;

Cruise control lock
Quick action throttle

I'd go for Ohlins - but will wait for the ESA to wear out.

Mirrors could be a possible and maybe a full Akra and power commander set up.

Lots of ideas so far.

Hmmmmm....

We don't need anymore problems with the 1200 do we.

I hope someone can explain why? That seems to be a very strange cause of head bearing failure!

In my case there are very few problems (apart from input gearbox oil seal, which took me a couple of days to sort)

Been racking the brain for something to stick on the bottom of the side stand, how did you attach the puck? Agree torx bolts are useless, it seems to be standard motorcycle manufacture to spoil the ship for a ha'porth of tar.

Pre drill the stand foot and puck with bolt size holes, then pull the nuts into the puck with longer bolts and replace with shorter stainless cap screws.

search for "sidestand hoof" made by Mark. Excellent bit of kit, takes mins to fit and lifts the bike up just nicely.

I use one on mine - best solution to the problem for me. The old man uses a slide on puck on his and it works but I like/prefer the Camel Toe

Nippy Normans do a little bolt on flat brake pedal wotsit. Bolts straight on top of the standard fanged top thingy, I found it gives me much better feel of what my right foot was up to. Dead simple to fit, which was good cos me and spanners dont get on right well.

Apart from that, mud sling, fender extender, engine bars as mentioned before.

When I get my next one, I shall be paying more attention to the seat height, being a short arse. Not much of a problem as it is but could be better.

Right, am off to research replacement mirrors as I have buggered one of mine when it fell against the garage wall during a kack handed reversing maneouvre. Oh and I need to replace a roundel after some thieving little sh*tehawk pinched one.
