Recommended replacement tyres?

Anybody ever used Heidenau K60 Scout‏ - seem to be highly rated tyres for 50/50 on-road / off-road use. Not sure how readily available they are within the UK (can't see any sizes available for the LC GS)

Dunlop TR91

Don't overlook the Dunlop TR91 which many say is the GS version of their Roadsmart tyre. Has come top in most reviews for the last two years only recently being pipped by the Tourance Next as it had worse tyre wear. Anakee 3 criticised for its road noise. Have been running the TR91 on my GS for 5000 miles now, minimum wear all weathers and very, very good.

Are these available on the LC? I thought we were stuck with the Anakee 3, Tourance and Trail Attacks.

Like a few other mainly road/touring riders on here I too would like to try the Michelin pilot 3s but I suppose we will have to wait until they wake up and smell the pound notes.

My problem is the Tourance Next's, They are not a bad tyre but the wear rate is very poor I find that they square very badly and far to easily.
This is when used mostly two up and with luggage for a lot of the time(on the correct pressures and settings). Most of the mileage has been done on A roads not Motorways AutoRoutes etc. On my last few GS's I would get about 6k from a rear tyre but with the Next's it is down to 3.5k before they become very square. I am sure a lot of the of the blame has to fall on me because the new engine and suspension just makes me want to ride it harder.(note I do not include the gear box)
Anyway it now has 7k on the clock with the second rear knacked and with the original front tyre still ok ish

My thought was to try using a Next on the front and say a Roadtec Z8 Interact on the rear. And yes I know its not a perfect solution but at least I was still thinking of sticking to the same brand of tyre.
If anyone has any constructive comment's please share them as I can not foresee any real dangers apart from profiles affecting turn in etc.

And If anyone mentions mixing crossply's with radials then they can go back to the 1100 section

There's an interesting report in this week's MCN, Richard Newland has an LC on long term test.

He reckons the Nexts to be the best road option, the Contis are a bit compromised and interestingly the Anakees whilst having good levels of grip, have too steep a side wall profile which leaves upwards of an inch untouched on the rear tyre.

This is exactly my experience, I'm almost to the edge of the front and the rear has about 20mm untouched. Now that shouldn't bother me too much but I'm concerned about the grip levels on the (as yet untouched) very edge of the rear tyre.

Also worth pointing out that every other version of the Tourance is dual compound whilst the LC version is single. Apparently Metzeler are homolagating a dual version for our bike, but ass to when that gets released is anyone's guess.

I thought that the Nexts were supposed to be dual compound, although my wear rates suggest that you are right with single compound.

Metzeler replied on their public facebook page:

Metzeler The new Tourance Next is radically different than the regular Tourance that has been in our range since about 1998. The Tourance Next features Metzeler Interact steel belted technology that is shared with the Roadtec Z8 and Sportec M5 along with a multi compound design.

And from the Metzeler site

The latest generation of Enduro Street tyres, featuring new compounds, profiles, structure and tread pattern for unmatched levels of stability, safety on wet and mileage.
•Improved wet grip and stability
•Improved mileage over previous Tourance EXP
Dual Compound rear sizes
•Ideal choice for the latest generation Adventure touring bikes
•OE on the new BMW R 1200 GS

Cant understand the comment about the shape of the 3. I am over to the edge and not a fast rider by a long way.,but that is with the size for previous model not the WC. Perhaps the new size is different.

I think you've got it bang on. Same brand and model but that's where the similarities end.

Me too. Both not reaching the edge of the rear and not 100% confident with them when right over. Really looking forward to seeing some purely road orientated tyres coming out.

Me too, I would even use Road Smarts and I am serious about using a roadtec z8 rear

I have the Tourance Next on mine, and will be moving to the Anakee3 when I change them next month.
Changed the REAR tyre NEXTs at 11500 KMS. front still ok and waiting for PILOT 3's to become available. NEXT's squared off at 6000kms.
Been to Greek islands and back and quite a bit of touring in Italy and France and west of Ireland. Replaced rear brake pads at 7000 kms. Bike has been fantastic and gets better

I have just had a reply from Dunlop Product Support, to a query I sent regarding availability of a Roadsmart 2 front tyre fitment for the GS. They are expecting this to be available in Dec.

Not perfect but at least it is in the pipeline.

Why would Michelin build the excellent PR3 (had it on my RT and it IS an excellent tyre) in the WC wheel size, since it is strictly a road tyre? Would it actually sell? Are there other motorcyles out there with the same size wheels?

I had a set of Anakee 3 on mine I wrote the rear off and had to replace with a 2
The front has done about 6K and is shot to the point of I have no confidence in it any more !
The rear Anakee 2 has done about 5 k mostly 2 up and loaded and is fairly square and getting to the wear indicators. The 3 when a set were very very good not so good as a 3 front 2 rear combi

I have some PR3 trails coming for fitting on Tuesday and I shall let you know what I think !

I had the PR3 'Trails' on my Explorer, and they were excellent!

They look just like the road/sport PR3's but have the dual compound ratio on the rear at a different mix, I think that the road version is 40/20/40 and the Trail is 10/80/10 on the rear tyre.
In other words the rear has a broader width of the hard compound and consequently a thinner strip of the softer stuff.
I believe that the fronts are very similar to each other, re road and trail compound ratios.

Also it says 'Trail' on the side of the tyre!:blagblah

I'll probably be fitting them onto my LC when the Anakee are knackered.

Did you know that you cannot wear the chicken strips off on the Anakee 3's???

Who's gonna say ...Oh yes you can? :augie

This might come as a bit of a shock but the vast majority of all GS's are used as road bikes. We see loads here and most owners say they never go off road.

I have road pilot 3s on my 1150, very happy so far but I have not had a chance to try them in the wet ( we are having a very dry summer here )

Changing the 'Next' rear tyre on my LC at 6500mls, happy with these at present until a wider selection is available :thumb
