I had the opportunity to ride with others from the Southern region today and had my sat nav switched on throughout for no other reason than to see the roads ahead and get an idea of where we were. I didn't have any route loaded as the ride leader knew the roads and route to be taken. When I got home it got me thinking about the extra functions and if there was a record of the route we had taken and sure enough it was all in there recorded in tracks. A quick internet search and I found instructions for turning that back into a useable route on the Garmin website. Upshot of all of this is an added function I was not aware of and goes some way to explaining the cost and flexibility of these units. As I learn more I am getting more comfortable with basecamp and this has just added another level to it's use.

Instructions for Mac computers:

To add track to My Collection:

  1. Open BaseCamp
  2. Connect your Garmin device
  3. Click the Receive from Device button
  4. Check the box for any data you wish to receive
  5. Click the Receive button
To create the route from the track:

  1. Right click the desired track in the Library and Devices area
  2. Click Create Route from Track
The route will now appear on the map as well as in My Collection.
To transfer the route to your device:

  1. Click My Collection
  2. Click the Send to Device button
  3. Select the device you wish to send the data to
  4. Click the Send button
This will transfer the route onto your device.
