I recently noticed that the grips on my '11 GSA were getting really worn and had just started to peel apart slightly. I've only done 12500 miles on it and would have thought they'd be more durable. However, thought I'd do something about it before it got much worse and here is my solution.
Firstly, I bought a couple of cricket bat handle covers off ebay for £5 including delivery. They're nice and thin as I like the diameter of the original grips and didn't want to make them too thick, also wanted the heater element not to be too insulated either. One regular rubber handle would in theory be long enough to cover both grips but you'll see why I bought 2 - the application process.

This is how my grips looked before, not too bad, but won't improve.

These are all the tools you'll need:
Cricket bat handle covers x 2
T55 Torx bit + ratchet
Scalpel
Non oily lubricant
Rubber solution glue (Optional)

Remove Torx bolt from handlebar end along with bar end weight.

Next turn half of the rubber sleeve inside out as shown below.

Next pour some lubricant in between the two rubber surfaces so that they will slide against each other when rolling the sleeve on to the handlebar.

Now get the sleeve started on the end of the bar as shown, then roll the sleeve on toward the centre of the bars.
(Your wife / girlfriend / grandma / other / might be useful for this next phase :D)

All you have to do now is wipe everything off, cut off the excess very carefully with a scalpel and reassemble. I glued the sleeve to the grip on the bar end for added security with some contact adhesive. Not sure how long it'll last but it's not the most onerous of tasks and only takes about 10 -15 mins a side

I wrapped a grip with 1/8" sorbothane - vibration absorbing rubber. I covered it with snooker cue heat shrink sleeve. It's now more like Japanese bike grip diameter than a BMW.
Two layers of Sorbothane with a heat element between would give even more anti vibe and heating.
I've not come up with a way to make the flared ends.

Proper job that. Nice work. I've been using grip puppies over my worn grips for ages but you're right, they do make the grips a little fat. I'll add replacing the grips to my list of things to do. Thanks for the write up:thumby:

Just been out for a good long ride today, grips feel great (if a little fatter than I was used to). With the heated grips on the rubber gets very tacky indeed, though this'll probably diminish as they get dirty over time. Thanks for the nice comments.
Steve.

Mr Fluff, they're an assortment of Husqvarna chainsaws from a previous life. They all work and are used mainly for firewood nowadays.

SteveM good write up, what size heat shrink did you use there, would it be the 33mm that shrinks down to 20mm ?

Steve's new sleeve grips are non heat shrink. Turning inside out and washing up liquid on the "inside" is a great idea. Keep the proper inside surface dry if you want to glue them.

Mine are standard snooker cue heat shrink sleeves, just big enough to go over the end rib then heat shrink to fit.

Top job, very neat and a great way of extending the life of perfectly functional grips. BMW won't like that :)

Nice idea, however for the effort involved may as well fit regular replacement grips, simple as above apart from stripping off the old grip but that's just taking your time/being carefully of heating elements

Yebbut my repair only cost me 50p and took about 30 mins.
BTW how much are a set of replacement grips typically? I didn't even price them up as I presumed they'd be exorbitantly expensive, but you never know, they could be quite reasonable.

Hi younger06, I ordered the 35mm which shrinks to 17.5 BUT may have f##ked up as just noticed dia of the old grip is 38mm at end of grip near the bar end weight compared to about 32mm for main part of grip. So I would order at least 40 mm. Not worried if the 35mm won't go as loads of other uses for it + i was only doing it for preventative reason.
