Moving out to Spain and want to take my bike but wonder how much does it cost to register the bike over there. Told by people out there it might be as much as a couple of thousand.

Regards Steve

don't know about Spain , Italy about £400 / bike , France a customer nearly gave up , frogs didn't like dealing with the English even though he is fluent , he got local mechanic to do it ...had papers in 5 days, £125.

Should be much cheaper than buying a new bike

I was talking to a Spanish guy in Marbella last year who had paid just under 30,000 Euros for his new 1200 GSA Triple Black

TBH the cost rather depends on your language skills, as a 'gestor' will want 3/400 Euros to undertake the job on your behalf & whether you have a detailed Cert of Conformity for your specific machine.

Just check out the Expat info site ............. https://britishexpats.com/forum/spain-75/importing-motorbike-uk-spain-899815/

As you are probably aware, in the past it was the habit of Brits to simply import a bike & ride it around in Spain on UK plates without a care in the World, often only insured in the UK, against a UK address & rarely if ever taxed. However the Spanish have wised up eventually, so such practices are ill-advised today.

Ok cheers everybody. Squibb34 that's just what I intended to do until someone I know out there fell foul of the police and they told him they could crush his bike for not registering it for over six months. I will see where google translate gets me and if not I have a Spanish solicitor that should do it for me. Pleased it sounds like hundreds and not thousands.

Regards Steve

You are allowed to have it In Spain for 6 Months, and then they expect you to register it onto Spanish plates, not unreasonable.
In Gibraltar it’s the same, and you have to pay 10% of the value as an import duty. The trick is to get it valued less. So if Spain is the same as I’m expecting it to be , take all the obvious extras off i.e. panniers, spot lights ect, don’t take it in for the valuation looking immaculate.

I keep my scooter, GSW and car in Spain and I’m expecting similar problems after Brexit. Let us know how it’s works out...:beerjug:

Steve,

If you are planning to take up residency over here than you can import the bike and benefit on reduced tax.

If not then it depends on the value of the bike, cars and bikes hold their value better here than in the UK.

My 2015 R1200GSA is worth about €15k here but would only be worth about £10k in the UK.

Several mates have registered their bikes in Spain and on average it cost them about €1000, one has recently brought a MV Agusta over and has done it with his personal possessions so has done it cheaper. I'll ask how much it cost him and report back.

My mate got back to me it cost €1500 to get his MV A changed to Spanish plates, it's only 4 years old so probably a similar value to a GS LC, after sorting his residency he was told it didn't make any difference to the importing process for his bike!

Still probably cheaper to import a UK bike than buying a used Spanish equivalent.

Hi Steve.

I imported a 2010 GSA last year and the total cost was around 800€. That included buying a second hand headlight from a fellow member, I actually had the instrument cluster from him as well but strictly speaking didnt need it as UK bikes display MPH and KPH. I dont know if your headlight would need replacing but I am sure you can find out.´

I am not sure if the process and costs vary from one region to another but I used a Gestor for all of the complicated stuff even though I am fairly fluent ( call me Lazy! ). They charge 95€ for their services and the rest of the bill will be for taxes and the issuing of a new registration number and the Permiso de circulation which is similar to the V5. There may be an import duty which will be based on the value of the bike but I am not sure how they work out the value as nobody from the tax office inspects the bike! They probably look at the UK market value?
You will also need to take the bike for a full ITV test ( a bit like an MOT ). At the test station they will first have a quick look at the bike and take some notes to enable them to produce the Ficha Tecnica. This is a Spanish document that every vehicle needs before it can be registered or tested. I paid 235€ for this. In my case once this had been done they emailed me and I made an appointment for the actual Test. They are very thorough so anything that is not standard on your model must come off! For example non factory fitted fog lights have to come off. Everything must work as it should. They are very strict on emissions and exhaust Db levels! This test cost me 95€.

All in all I probably saved 1500€ as the same bike here would have cost a lot more and I had a great road trip bringing her down from the UK.

Good Luck. :beerjug:

Just as a side note. It has been hinted at by the Government in Gibraltar, that we might need to get an international driving license, as the Gib/UK ones won’t be excepted in the EU after we leave. I have ordered one, just to be on the safe side.

It may be just Gib, so as not to give the Guardia Civil on the Spanish frontier an excuse to cause a problem. It might be worth checking out though, if you are living in Spain, and using your UK issued driving licence.
