Registering the Garmin unit

Just a quick question for those who own a 2820/Nav III.

I remember reading that people used to wait a while before registering their unit to get a later mapping for the GPS. Is it still worth doing that now? Or is the mapping with the 2820 pretty good?

Also do you need to register to use the firmware updater?

I presume yours came with CN8 NT in which case the next drop CN9 NT is due sometime early next year Jan/Feb. Garmin honour free upgrades for units regsitered after a release date but the unit shipped with the old version so if you want to wait for a free upgrade don't register until you see notice of its release.

Their new practice is to relase new mapping more regularly with less changes and charge less money. It used to be 18-24 month upgrades and $150US price tag, now yearly upgrades and $75US price tags.
