registry cleaners

advise please

i have in the past, come across free download resisty cleaners, only to find after i have used them that i get a pop up informing me i have serious resistry problems and that i ned to buy XYZ software.
Obviously it was in the free ware, can anyone recommed a 'clean' freeware regisry cleaner.
I shouldnt really beggar about with the regisry as my knowledge can get me into big trouble, but i get very hacked off with my explorer and isp defaulting my home page , and toolbars etc.

I Use CCleaner it always asks if you want to back up any changes to the registry, so if things do go wrong you can repair it again.

First thing I would recommend is to do a good spyware scan and setup browser protection. Download, install and run each of these three completely free programmes. Be sure to run them regularly (every couple of weeks) to keep your PC clean.

Now, get hold of Hijack This to tidy up the start-up programs in your registry and reset the browser search bar etc. - http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

With these programs you will be pretty well sorted and won't need to pay a penny to anyone. Of course, should you feel so obliged you can always make a donation to the authors for the excellent work they do.
