Regret not optioning ESA on new 1250 GSA!!

Yes, gear shift assist can be retrofitted. It's about £400-500 though. From memory, £395 from factory.

If you would sign up for the forum and pay 12 quid it would be easy to send you some info by Private message, but because you are not subscribed it is not possible, as to how you can do this for not a lot of money, I mean the ESA,

Likely to be the outcome. :-)

If you hang on a few months, you will get the 2020 model with the latest upgrades.
I don't know what that might be, perhaps heated seats, switches with back-light?
Anyway, BMW have rarely introduced the "next years model" without tweaking the bike for the (even) better.

Switches with back light??..... ok so what switches do you need to be considering when riding in the dark, so much so, you need to look at the handlebars to figure it out ?

Please for the love of God, stay at home when it gets dark.... :D

(Also, if you want a heated seat like I did, just pay £500 to Wunderlich and fit it.... way cheaper than paying for a bike upgrade) :D

Just saying.....

The fact that other bikes have the features and not BMW doesn't disqualify them as useful features.

Some people want lighted switcher, others don't. If you don't like it, don't look at the switches. While those of us that occasionally takes a peek just to see where the switches are when wearing heavy gloves and it's dark 5 o'clock may enjoy the feature.

BMW have used heated seats on their touring bikes for years. Why not the GS? If you don't like it, don't order it....

Or you may take the bus :) :bow

Thanks Smogbob. There's a cheap alternative for ESA?? I'm all ears! :-)

Given the size of the shit sandwich / depreciation curve of trading in a nearly brand new bike, it probably wouldn't make any notable difference if I did wait until the end of the year to do the exchange, but in the meantime, it means I would have a bike I don't enjoy.....which isn't ideal.

If you do decide to chop yours in for an ESA equipped bike, let me know what final p/ex value they offer you and maybe I can offer you a bit more. We’d need to do it privately though :thumb2

I’ve got the gear assist on my 2014 RT and I like it, you do have to give the gear lever a firm prod though.

Agree - I only find it useful if accelerating fairly hard. Any other time it's notchy and harder than doing an ordinary gear change with the clutch. As a result, I forget it's there, and use the clutch 99.9% of the time. IMHO not really worth having.

Must say I find the ESA on my 1250 GSA pretty good . In auto mode you can feel the difference when in the various drive modes . Rain and road seem softer than dynamic and the handling is I feel better than my previous WC 1200's . It does however have a lot of computer monitoring which makes me wonder how it will be in 4 years time if I keep it ?

The electronics should be as reliable as any other you have been using for the last 20 years, it is nothing new, just a new application.

Hi Paul. The best notional part ex offer so far is £13.5k against a new bike (with ESA). I would ideally like £14k for it. It was £15 400 OTR 2 months ago. First 600 mile service done. Total mileage 700. Given that a 1250 GSA TE is £17500 OTR, it's £3500 cheaper for anyone who prefers non ESA and no waiting for it. I'm torn between another GSA (prefer the look / presence / tank etc) and a GS Exclusive. Had both previously. The GS is slightly more comfortable I find due to the narrower seat (and the fact that you can factory order a 'comfort seat') but they are slightly bland looking compared to the GSA I think.

I agree, I prefer the look of the GSA. I'll have to get a test ride on a 1250 next week and see what I think. I rode my 2013 GS yesterday for the first time in 6 months and I couldn't believe how different the engine felt compared with my RT, so much more revvy. I prefer the more torquey feel of the heavier flywheel in the RT so I should imagine the 1250 will feel even better.

I know what you mean. All good for first 3 years under warranty then ????? on all the electronics etc. I kept my first 2004 GS for 7 years, but since then, I have changed my bike ridiculously regularly, so I haven't come anywhere near close to expensive repairs out of warranty.........but then I have spent alot on new bikes / servicing etc so I guess either way, being a fan of these bikes is going to cost! A friend of mine said; 'if it has tits or wheels it will cost you'! :-)

Knut waiting for the 2020 could be not good if they go to EU-5 which might be like 2017 when they went to EU-4.The EU-3 bikes had a much stronger mid range !
As for the current model generation I don't think we"ll see upgrades anymore except for a few new colors.I expect autumn 2022 the all the boxer generation that will bring weight reductions and another bump in displacement and hopefully an R 1400 XR...:thumb

PaulR;GSA or GS is pretty easy.If your legs are long enough get the GSA.More comfortable, bigger tank, quicker steering,20 mm's more to lean before things scrape and additional driving lights as also mounts for the much better aluminum bags and topcase.Just don't go faster than 125...:D

Actually, BMW claims that the 1250 is Euro-5 compliant..

Nice one, did you go for a TE in the end? What are they giving you for your GSA?

Apologies if already mentioned, it’s a long thread. Might be worth calling Darren at Mototechniks Stowmarket.

Yes. Went for the 'exclusive' which is a TE with a slightly more interesting paint job and some additional black bits here and there. It's all about the 'cost to change' with these deals, but the 'notional' part ex is a theoretical £13.5k. I would have liked £14k but wanted to get things sorted asap versus shop around endlessly. GSA is a more 'interesting' looking bike, but the GS is more comfy for me.
