I've fitted a 400 watt alternator to my R100 Gs, "QUESTION" do i need to up rate the regulator, motorworks do i high out put police spec regulator???

I'm with redboots on this..the 'new' regulator was to assist the police biker at scenes to help them keep the radio/blue lights working etc...BMW regulator OK for normal use but as and when that packs up..the 'new' type is the one to replace it with.

The only thing that breaks on a VFR is the Regulator/Rectifier.

The reason giver is that Honda fitted a 300 watt Reg/ Rec to match the 300 watt alternator, but as they heat up the alternator gives more power, and the R/R can handle less.Usually fails if you have flattened the battery and jump started it, and the full output is going to the battery

The result is a burnt out R/R.

The factory replacement is rated 360 watt, but most folks go to a wrecker and get the biggest one they have.

Solves the problem , they rarely fail again.

So, will a R/R designed for a 280 watt alternator cope with 400 watts?

Try it and see.but you might have to check with an almost flat battery to be certain.

If it works , Ok.

If it doesnt , you will have to get an upgraded one.

Just carry a fire extinguisher with you while you try.

If you bought the upgrade from Motoworks these are their words:

If your BMW is fitted with the standard regulator we also recommend replacing it with ELA44410. Check your brushes (ELA44480) and springs (ELA50786) too!

They might say that to get more sales, but I would put a new regulator in if the old one is very old.

BTW, the lead from the diode board goes through the timing case cover and uses a grommet to protect the cable from being chafed. It'll probably break when you try to take it off the old lead ;)

Haven't found the p/n of it yet :(

Isn't it 'Thunderchild' that makes an uprated regulator? Or have I got it wrong and they make something else :nenau

Good call BumpMuncher.

I've sent them an Inquiry about a bulk purchase of their 400W alternators and possibly their other BMW parts. If they are up for it I'll see how many people are interested.

Rob, I would be happy to have your input on the 400 watt alternator and up rated regulator.

The oil cooler (on the 3-4th page) looks interesting, seems to be a sump extender with internal tubes open to the outside for a through-flow of cooling air. Wonder how you would keep that free of mud n crud?

I've had a reply from Jeff Lee. Apparently he logs onto this site. Jeff says that we could order directly but [ayment would have to be by bank transfer. With a bit of luck he may reply on this thread.

Jeff also mentions he has a new ignition for the 82 to 95 airheads. I couldn't find any mention of it on his site but it could be interesting.
