Not mine, but if I had the spare cash they would have been several days ago. Plus the fact that my R80 already has one.

Two of these puppies are the black top police spec regs which are over £90 from motorworks. thought they must be worth the heads up.

I got a diode board thats capable of standing the temps better - and a higher spec regulator 14.3v posted from San Diego for £65
HTHY and saves yer dosh

Blimey! Why the massive price difference then? And is the adjustable one as good as the police spec oe version?

Val.

The adjustable version goes to 13.5v which is absolutely as far as you want to go with a 12v battery or else they can get fried, the police spec regulator doesn't charge to a higher voltage, it just starts a little further down the revs, to stop police bikes getting flat batteries when left ticking over when attending incidents I think!

Ok. So the Police spec reg is designed to give a higher charge at lower reves (which is great as I only ever potter around on my little tricycle, that already has one fitted). But the others are all normal spec (ie don't start charging at the lower reves of the police spec version), except one of them can be adjusted to prefference?????

Concluding then that the normal 'red top' reg is easily replaced with a much cheaper reg that does the same job. However if you want/need the charging at lower reves you will still need to buy the Police spec version as there is no cheeper option. That right? :nenau

I had a peek under Jills tank to see which is fitted to her 100. It's the red top version. So considering she does more pottering than scratching I guess the normal reg does fine in most cases :thumb2

Anyway if your looking for a hi output reg jump quick. At £57 ish for new old stock it's a bit of a bargain I reccon.

Hi Val,

see if this helps clarify -taken from EME Website - any probs just email John there, who is really helpful-

Price $19.00

Part #: VR-Ext/P

Replacement electronic voltage regulator with plastic housing. Nylon plastic mount absorbs vibration. Bolt-on replacement. High output regulator is pre-set at 14.3 volts which is higher than the stock voltage regulator.

Vehicle Manufacturer: BMW, Moto Guzzi

Application: 1970-1995 BMW R Airhead & Moto Guzzi 1970-1992

Make/Model: BMW, Moto Guzzi: Model 247

Model Years: 1970 to 1995

Vehicle Mfg. Part #: 12 32 1 244 409

Power Rating: 14.3 Volts

Original Equipment:

Technical Information: Plastic housing electronic voltage regulator set at 14.3 volts, which is higher than the stock unit. High output design rated up to 65 amps. Compliant nylon plastic absorbs engine's harmonic vibrations.

I have just bought one of these to fit on my PD, - will be fitting in a few days,so no direct experience as yet.

As I understand matters ...
the BMW red top regulator (standard fitting), doesn't kick-in until around 4000 Revs, and at a lower voltage,

the "police" type Black Top, kicks-in at 2000 Revs, with the higher voltage.

The "mechanical" adjustable regulator can go to a higher voltage, but can cause damage to battery if set too high ,

the EME part (as above @ $19 + p+p) , works the same as the "Police" black top, but costs a fraction of the price - no idea why MWorks are charging (pun intended !) so much for theirs.

..... again info from EME site ....

Part #: VR-Ext/Adj

Replacement electronic voltage regulator with metal housing. Bolt-on replacement. ADJUSTABLE voltage setting allows maximizing of the charging system for urban operation.

Vehicle Manufacturer: BMW, Moto Guzzi

Application: 1970-1995 BMW R Airhead & Moto Guzzi 1970-1992

Make/Model: BMW, Moto Guzzi: Model 247

Model Years: 1970 to 1995

Vehicle Mfg. Part # : Not available from dealer ; replaces BMW # 12 32 1 244 409

Moto Guzzi Part # : 29703801

Power Rating: 14.3 Volts; can be adjusted to higher voltage, comes with 2- page voltage regulation adjustment guide...

Brand: EnDuraLast Brand

Technical Information: Set at 14.3 Volt trim setting; Adjustable voltage setting allow for optimizing the correct voltage for lower RPM urban operation. Must be used with caution as over charging with higher voltage setting can and will damage a battery. Metal housing electronic voltage regulator.

Not recommended to exceed 14.5 V. Misadjustment will damage electrical components, including battery !
Comes with 2-page voltage trim setting guide.

Of course you could always dispense with all the associated airhead charging problems/weaknesses by fitting the EME stator, electromagnet rotor, and do away with

original rotor, brushes, diode board, voltage regulator, and replacing with just one solid state "box", as per the following info...

# 450 Watt / 32 Amp Alternator
# Permanent Magnet Rotor, Brushless Design with remote-mounted Voltage Regulator / Rectifier
!

Have this EME system on my other Turquoise PD, and it is simply brilliant- taken me on 3 long summer trips, and no probs - I can use heated grips, heated jacket, headlamps and sat nav, and not have to worry, riding slow or fast !! Would rarely have jacket and heated grips on together though. Not a cheap alternative to standard system, but waay cheaper than having a rotor or diode board pack up in the middle of nowhere !
If you need any info on all the above, check out EME's site...

Val - hope to see you ( and Jill and your dog ?) at the Wee Kend again this year,

cheers
Roger

My Thunderchild ones have done aprox 10 thou miles and I aint charged battery
dont have to switch lights off when trailing or put putting around town

Yes, been good reports on Thunderchild , but no personal experiences myself.
They do special diode boards too I think ?
