I've got an old MMX200 processor Toshiba Libretto laying in a drawer doing nothing and it occured to me the other day that I might be able to turn it into a half useable device by installing one of the newer distributions of Linux.

I looked a few years ago but didn't want to commit the time and effort needed to get older distributions running. The newer ones look a lot simpler to instal and maintain, as well as having better driver & hardware support.

So can one of you linux geeks out there tell me:

1. Will linux run better than windows on a 20gb mmx200 with 64Mb of ram?

2. Will it support WiFi if I get a WiFi pcmcia card?

3. What is the network support like? I've got a 10/100 lan card somewhere I could use?

4. Can I use VMWare or some form of dual boot so that I can still run windowsME for some sailing & navigation programmes?

5. And this is the biggie - Which distribution should I buy?

6. Will I need to buy a pair of sandals, grow a pigtail and stop washing?

Cheers

Steve

i tried it with an old toshiba tecra laptop.

run from a live cd in the tray - then loaded on the hdd.

it works, its a bit quicker, but its still slow.

you can use it as an email server or a static mp3 player thru the hifi - but not constant use.

i used Mepis - better than ubuntu IMO
