got a bit of brain fade at the moment.

if i add a new HDD to a pc on the secondary IDE channel, do i need an 80 way cable or will slaving it on the existing 40 way to the CD-ROM work ok?

i know i'd need one to make the pc boot from it, but i don't need to do that.

Use the existing cable (although everything will run at the speed of the slowest device on t'cable, ie the CDROM).

Otherwise invest in a new PCI IDE card and get the joy of IDE channels 2 and 3 to go with 0 and 1 and suddenly find you have filled your PC with all the spare hard disks you have in the house...

ta.

i assume it will work as slave on IDE 0 ok too with 40 way?

Aye lad. Best choice to keep devices of the same type on their own controller. Spent ages trying to work out why a colleagues PC was crawling occasionally then discovered he'd reconnected things "to make them neater" and put and IDE zip drive on the cable with his boot disk and a CD-RW on the cable with a second hard disk...

SATA PCI controller cards are only about 20 quid now...whack one of those in Cookie, ready for a good speed increase.

I've seen SATA 250gig drives for under 80 quid retail as well........not looked at online stockists but i'd imagine they'll be down to 50ish quid now...silly money for storage

it's for a mate who cares little for speed as long as it works acceptably, and it will.

ask him for £20 for a SATA card & i'd get told not to bother :P
