I am looking to reduce the weight on my 1150. Would anyone know what the weight of the Catalytic converter is and would it be OK to replace it with Touratechs y-piece front pipe and leave the original silencer in place.
The cat is extremely heavy and well worth removing. There’s a huge amount of information in the forums about Y pieces and cat removal so worth a search. Most favour a remus Y piece although you can get cheaper copies. I believe there’s a guy on the forums who’s now manufacturing Y pieces – I’m sure someone will know the details. Standard can will be fine although personally I prefer an aftermarket system.

I have an 1150GS and went down the road of removing the CAT and replacing it with a REMUS Y Piece. The replacement was quiet simple. But the result not so. My bike suffered with starting issues, poor uneven running and was noisier. I replaced the CAT- not out of preference but to keep the bike running as it should. How much weight are we talking about ? Are you going to save on MPG ? I think not. I sold my REMUS piece and fortunatly got a decent price. I was glad to have a smooth, quiet bike back. Think carefully before replacement-you may have the same problems as I had.

my 1150 ran better with the cat off,with st silencer or remus , it certainly shouldnt give starting issues?
some times theres probs,but usually there isnt,
its pipey, i think, (chads mate) who does the Y pieces,
they will be as good as touratwats, and not need a re mortgage to buy

Me too....................I have had 4 1150GS's since 2000 (bloody hell - 10 years on 1150GS's
) and never felt the need to replace the Collector box on any of them................I spent the money on Ohlins F&R to make the bike go betterpetemak

REMOVAL OF 1150 CATALYTIC CONVERTOR
Hi Everyone, Thanks replies. My main consideration is to save weight. My reasons for this are we travel two up, fully loaded ie camping equipment etc. I weigh in at 60 kilos, so any weight i can save makes life a lot easier. I am not concerned with MPG or performance. Always glad to here and take on boared peoples comments.

Replacing the cat with a Y piece and using an aftermarket can will save you some weight but on a bike that weighs almost 250kg + rider + pillion + luggage, you’re not going to really notice any major difference. Weight saving on a R11XXGS isn’t going to be easy – there really isn’t much you can afford to lose. As a possible suggestion you could look at using 17” cast wheels from the R1150RS\RT – these will save some un-sprung weight and also have the advantage of lowering the bike which makes the weight more manageable.
Away and have a shite before you both set off. Far cheaper and a bigger weight loss than fitting a Y peice.

The primary reason for running a Y piece instead of the cat is to save it from being ruined by the sh1t fuel you get in some areas of the world
Of course the resulting fruity exhaust note will make the bike far more of a pleasure to ride
You will find a significant weight saving by junking the cat and exhaust and fitting a Y piece and an aftermarket can. Whether you'll actually be able to tell and whether there is a significant performance chnage is unlikely given the overall weight of the bike.
Hasn't stopped me fitting a Y piece and a straight through can though

I've had stubby's made to ditch the original exhaust, which will save around the same weight... sold the bike with my last stubby ... now I don't have one
Either way seems good

Just go for the stubby and larger LH pannier so you can carry more and in it to save weight in the RH panner
