I've seen a few threads about doing this on the 1150 GS, but none on the 1200 GS.

I would imagine there are differences (in the electronics?). Has anyone done this, and how different is it from the 1150?

Thanks in advance,

Keith.

It's sort of the same. But a bit different.
You can't go by the 1150 servo removal thread in the font of all wisdom.

It's sort of remove the servo, unscrew the electric pack from the servo, replace the electric pack back into the socket. :D

I have read somewhere of it being done but can't remember where! :blast

The brake lines can be connected direct to the calipers from the master cylinders in much the same way that the 1150 servo removal is done. I'm not sure about the brake lights and the brake failure warning light but I do remember that the speedo stopped working on the one that was done. When the bike was taken to a dealers and plugged into the GT1 the computer automatically saw that the model was an ABS one. What was needed was the information for a non ABS version to be downloaded into the CPU. By some method the dealer was able to fool the GT1 into thinking a non ABS model was plugged in, the correct info was downloaded and everything worked okay.

At least this is my understanding of what was needed but I'm no technical expert. Give me twin leading shoes and cables anyday! :thumb2 :D

PS Steptoes method sounds easier. :bow

There's a thread about removal from a 1200 over on Advrider.

and no sorry, I don't have a link.

I did carry some small/inexpensive BMW parts to do this in case of emergency, but they were in a pannier that got robbed

Not sure if they were manufactured solely for this purpose. I remember a small cranked metal pipe in particular, I think that was to directly connect the rear brake. I never tried or had to use them.

If your dealer doesn't know what I'm talking about I'll try and find the invoice and part nos., but it was about six years ago!

Thanks for the input chaps...................

Thanks All for the input. I did try to find the thread on Advrider but couldn't find it at all.

I ended up following Steptoe's method and it worked like a dream! (Many thanks Neil - the help was much appreciated).

The most difficult bits were removing the mounting screws for the ABS unit (the one in the middle was siezed and stripped and had to be snapped off) and removing the security screws to allow me to seperate the electronics from the rest of the unit (Cut them off with a cutting disc on a Dremel).

I now have good and consistent brakes, a working speedo and flashing warning lights which will be covered over with black PVC insulation tape.

Great result, I don't know why I was so scared to do it in the first place!

Ride safe,
Shad.

Yes................................

Hi Neil,
yes, it was me that rang. Sorry to catch you on a busy day, it helped me a lot (I'd intended to try to get rid of the servo for a couple of years but my local official BMW fdealer kept telling me it was not possible. You gave me the confidence to attempt it.

I don't have any brake light at the moment, but was planning to just wire the switches to a relay and drive the brake light from that (and remove the bulbs in the warning lights!).

I'm working outside at the moment, so this weekends weather has hampered things a bit, but there's no rush, I'm using an old 1100GS while the 1200 is off the road.

Thanks again for the help, I owe you!

Shad.
