I managed to just remove the Valve Cover on 1150 GS Adv (2003) past the engine bars.

I now realise to get valve cover back on and aligned i'm going to have to remove the engine bars.

They appear to be the OEM ones which came with bike (i've not owned from new).

I see that there is a fixing under the tank which i can get an allan key (assuming its an allan key bolt) on to just.

I'm wondering if the tank has to be removed to take this bolt out.

Has anyone got experience of this.

Also, is the allan key assumption correct or is is likely to be a Torx ..

engine bars

If they are the original BMW 1150 adventure bars.... and you just need to replace rocker covers etc....

Just remove the lower parts of the bars....
They can be taken off from the bottom ... take the sump-cover off, and unbolt the side bars from the central
cross piece..... and you can leave the upper parts in situ.

Doesn't sound like you've got original bmw adv bars fitted. You've no need to remove original BMW adv bars to remove the valve covers.

Maybe Hepco & Becker bars. I need to only loosen all bolts on the left-hand side. Tilting the bar then gives enough space. But I have to remove the RH bars.
Take care with rear mounting bolt at Gbox. It's tricky to line-up. Supporting Gbox with a jack is necessary. Maybe you'll be luckier and only have to loosen the bolts.
Everytime I have to do it I resolve to buy a pair of good head guards and bin the bars.

Yes, tank off to access front bolt. Torques: 23Nm front, 42Nm engine and gbox AFAIR

Apologies i've now checked and they are Hepco

I found some instructions online and it suggests that you need to lift tank back. I take that means not completely off the bike.

I'm working on left hand side so will try and go with the loosening of bolts.

Thanks for thoughts and advice from all

Probably best to remove them and sell them. They are a continual annoyance when you want to work on the bike. I put them alongside immobilisers and alarms for annoyance.
