Removing the GSA screen

Got me a Zumo 590LM (which may be a mistake but never mind).

I'm fitting it to the TT mount and using Nippy Normans' GPS mount to fit it to the screen rail but reckon it would be good if I removed the screen first.

So, how do I remove the screen from a 2011 GSA, please?

Hi Richard, its a really easy job.

Undo the big screen adjuster bolts either side of the screen, 10 mm spanner and remove those blind nuts on the end of the bolt inside the fairing. Then unscrew the bolt completely using the plastic knobs, dont mix them up as they are left and right handed.

then undo the 4 bolts on the screen.....

Simples

As you guessed, it was the removal of the adjuster bolts that had caused me to pause for thought.

It's best to hold the little nuts on the inside of the adjusters. They are special top hat shaped things and if they drop they will roll away somewhere. I put some anti seize grease on my adjuster threads. The plating was looking worn so this stopped it getting any worse. If the nuts seize up, getting them out again will be who knows what of a struggle

Be careful not to ham-fistedly shear off the plastic adjuster head from the steel bolt inside, (done it twice on two bikes!). Araldite is your friend.

Fit the Wunderlich Screen Save whilst you're doing the job, it'll keep the Garmin more stable and eliminate the possibility of the lower plastic pegs sheering under the increased strain. I've also found that the small "tobinator effect" has reduced buffeting a little.

Which 'lower pegs' are susceptible to sheering?


I'm intending to use Nippy Normans GPS mount http://preview.tinyurl.com/o4oh3v3 to mount the TT locking cradle for the 590. Can you see any flaws in that plan?

I assume you'll be mounting everything on the GSA screen rail as per your original post, even without the Garmin fastened to the rail there's a lot of movement in the screen which can result in wear and possible failure of the small black plastic pieces that secure the 2 lower mounting screws, you'll discover the pegs when you detach the screen. With a Garmin mounted the extra strain and shaking can be more severe, exasperating the problem. I fitted the Wunderlich bits and was quite surprised how much less movement there is in the screen, much better

Be aware though that there are different Wunderlich parts for '04-'07 and '08-'13.

That's interesting.

Yep, all will be on the top rail. Interestingly, my Zumo 550 is currently mounted on the top rail with a RAM mount so is rather more suspended than the 590 will be using the NN clamp. When the bike is out of tune (more out of tune!) the Zumo oscillates at about 0.5Hz or possibly slower at certain speeds. I imagine that the length of the RAM arm exacerbates the vibration in the screen.

I already have the Wunderlich extension to the screen so the wind loading is, probably, excessive.

Interesting. I'm 6'2'' and find that the 550, on what sounds like the same RAM configuration as you have, is fine on the top rail of the GSA screen. Might take a pic when I'm next near the bike - currently stored at parents owing to stalled garage rebuild. Never get your brother-in-law to start building anything for you - even if he is a builder

Another benefit of the Wunderlich Screen save is that it can move the complete assembly, screen and support bar, upwards by around 20mm which helps if you're over 6 feet tall.

H/W a picture taken from (my) eye level of my Zumo on the GSA. What I failed to remember is that the RAM U bolt is fixed to the lower screen rail.
