im quite tec minded and need to take my wheels off to take to the fitters to have the new tyres i have bought put on them. is there anything i need to be aware of and is there a certain way of doing this .. i have noted that it can somtimes drop onto the sump sometimes..

Remove the front one first so it doesn't fall forward.

I put a block of wood on the rear brake pedal, to hold it on whilst I slacken the rear wheel bolts, then undo the caliper.

Remove front calipers and don't forget the pinch bolts on the forks.

Have a couple of axle stands or something to put under the fronk forks and the rear torsion arm/bevel box :thumb

You must torque the rear bolts up when refitting and ideally all the others.

Turn it upside down, like you used to do with your pushbike, then take the wheels off :D

yeah .. I saw you do that in your workshop with a customer's bike .. it was a neat technique. I couldn't believe the weight those handlebars and rear rack could take. Have to be seen to be believed.

i think ill take it somowhere to have it done. dont want to risk it .. do most tyre places know all this ??????????????

If you do this, FFS take the mirrors and screen off first, or you'll have to hold it up for ages while you text a mate and get him to do it for you. Which is a bore.

Removing wheels.

Come on Kenny, surely there are a few tips you could pass on here? :D

You need to come down here to Tasmania. It took a while for it to sink in, but when someone says G'day cock to you its a term of endearment. So obviously Johnnyg was saying thanks for the great advice. And as usual great advice it has been on this thread.

But to someone from Kent, calling them a 'Point of Lay Chicken' is a term of endearment ;)

Most tyre companies don't want the hassle / legal liability of taking someones wheel off and putting it back on, but I think its one of those jobs that looks worse on paper / screen than it does in reality. Ring around though, and you will usually find a company that will do it all.

If you're still shafted after reading this lot and ringing around, I have one of those adventure DVDs at home, and thers a brilliant section just on changing wheels and tyres. If you're up Cack Creek, I can lend it to you - but I'm not interested in selling it. :thumb
