A friend of mine picked up a secondhand 1150 yesterday with a Y piece and Remus fitted. In the top box was an exhaust extender which the dealer said should be fitted on long trips with the panniers fitted to stop the left one melting.

My 1150 also has a Remus and Y piece and I have not experienced any problems, but we are riding through Spain next month. Is the extender really necessary, or is there only a problem if you are really blasting it? We aim to cruise down through Spain at 80-90mph.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I had my panniers fitted constantly with no problems with the Remus. I think it all depends on the angle the endcan is fixed at, sounds strange but even though they are all supposed to be the same I have seen some that are litterally pointing towards the pannier.  It seems to be the Y-peice that causes it, as it happens with the std end can too. See this thread.
