Hi Guys,
Down in Porto, on my way to Ghana, my back box has gone west. I need to replace it, sharpish, keeping the expense down at the same time. Anyone down this way or know of a quick way to get a replacement. Please take a look at photos, I never had this happen before

Just cut and use a strip of cooking oil can or proper oil can and some wire or preferably jubilee clips?

If you can find them? Commercial Truck or Dumptruck Digger dealer? "Should" have big ones for Intercooler hoses, Radiator hoses and air intake rubber seals etc

If you cant find gun gum or exhaust sealing paste to smear the back of the pipe before fitting the can just use mud!

Cut strip off can enough to go around

Plaster the rear side with sealer

fold around can and slide you two jubilee clips on the outside and nip them up! N.B. Big Self tappers might do if you cannot get pop rivets?

Maybe you could slide your tin up the inside of the pipe before refitting the end can end????

Cut it off where it's cracked then refit the end with pop rivets or self tappers (if you can find somewhere with a drill).

I got this done at a Yamaha dealer in Porto, big difference between them and my local Honda dealer, who won't even have a conversation with you if you mention BMW. 50 Euros and he didn't even scratch his head, let alone suck air through his teeth. Oh the good old days.

For those that are interested, I'm on an Adventure trip to Ghana. I've a thread on ukgser 60 in Africa, which is also the name of my Facebook page and my web site is the same, ending in .com

The same has happened again. It's been repaired again but I fear its a reoccurring issue. Can anyone shine a light on why. Thanks

It happens a lot with big singles and twins

I have seen quite a few Stainless Carbon and Titanium ones split and a friend had his Remus blow on his 1150 whilst riding it scaring the dung out of him

Alloy can flex as can chromed steel, but, Stainless, Titanium and CF are all very very rigid and do not flex well leading to stress fractures and cracking

My Advice Get a bit of alloy sheet 1 ~ 2 mm (Or an old gallon or 5 litre metal oil can will do) and fit "just" around the the last 3 to 4 inches of the pipe

coat the back with a few runs of Silicone sealer and wrap it onto the can

fit 3 x jubilee clips (start middle and end) and just tighten them until it squeezes the silicone onto the can

This will "reduce" the flexing that is cracking the base material and hopefully do the trip

Just check the silicone but most are safe to a couple of hundred degrees

That's great, at the moment, it has a new skin, which looks like a thicker aluminium, (not sure if the original wasn't titanium) and seems to be holding. When I get somewhere that has a reasonable garage spares, I'll do that. In the middle of the Sahara. Thanks.

This is what I was able to sort in the middle of the Sahara
