Just fitted an alloy Remus can, in place of the standard silencer on my 1150GSA...

The hot exhaust gas has started to melt the corner of the numberplate

Anyone else had this

Yep very common, especially when used with panniers fitted, you can get an extenstion pipe but that looks awful when the panniers are off...

TT Zega panniers fitted, I had an extension pipe but it doesn't work with the Remus, just the stock silencer...

mine has been fine over 26 months.
only a bit of soot on the Givi pannier frame. :thumb

got a remus on my 1150GSA at the moment with no problems , but when I had y piece fitted it did melt the plastic clips on the BWM pannier frame.
So if you have a y piece fitted maybe gases are a lot hotter than when cat is fitted :nenau

Fitted my hexicone to my 800gs about 2 weeks ago, last weekend the top corner of the number plate went all impotent on me!!

Forgot to mention, there is a Y piece fitted...

I imagine you also have the baffle out as well ?

My bike came with y-piece, Remus Carbon baffle out, result melted plate and some of the powder coating on the pannier frames a bit cooked :augie

The previous owner did put in a extension pipe to take hot gases past plate after it started to melt but it looked ugly and didn't seal very well.

I put the baffles back in the pipe and this cooled the gases down considerably, and stoppped the melting situation.

In the end though I took it off left the Y-piece and run with the standard silencer, it puts the power into the mid-range where you need it instead of at the top where it's not needed, for me anyway :rob

Yup - Remus Hexacone on 800GS. Top left corner of plate fried and peeled away completely. This happens because the exhaust is narrower than the stock can and the outlet is much nearer the plate.

I replaced the plate and put reflective tape on the back. Slightly better but starting to bubble again. :(

I've tried to find a metal plate but couldn't get one. I'm exploring another avenue at the moment - i'll let you know if I sort it out.

Failing that a very short personalised reg and a small plate might sort it out - an expensive fix though

Got a nice melted hole in pannier from mine...total bl@@dy waste of money. Doesn't take the knocks either. BMW knew what they were doing when they designed the original...

does she pop n bang on the over run , my old 1150GS used to and after a particularly spirited run one evening i got home to find the indicator had melted:eek
after blipping the throttle a couple of times you could see a pretty blue flame on every backfire:P

my current 1150 even with the y piece and open can dont pop at all:confused:
still it saves on the indicators and numberplates:D

05 GSA, Remus Carbon, Y piece, no baffle, no blue flames, system panniers indicator and number plate all still fine after 18 months / 23000 miles ~ just an idea: mixture problems / overfuelling? or exhaust iteslf, body of remus does not get too hot in pannier vicinity.
Hope this helps. PRB

I had a BOS exhaust and y-piece and it melted my numberplate

I found a local fabricator who made me up an aluminium plate just slightly bigger than the numberplate, nice rounded corners and about 3-4mm thick

Looked nice and solved the problem!

Extension pipes look pants IMO.

Small number plate is the way to go :thumb2

Doesn't have to be stoopid small, just a bit smaller. You've seen mine David, doesn't look illegal (but defo looks better) and has never got me a tug, done for the same reason with my BOS system.

Andres

David, is your set up like mine as I've not had any problems with or without system panniers fitted.
