Seems to be a bad combination. The last time I fitted panniers to my Remus equipped 1150 I ended up melting a pannier and totally destroying it. Before I melt the newly acquired replacement pannier (which would be somewhat fecking annoying), can anyone offer any advice about the aftermarket exhaust extensions that are available. Do these work? It is a guaranteed fix or do I need additional protection?

Currently considering reflective stick on heat shielding along with the idea of spacing out all of the three mounting points.

Experiences appreciated. Ta.

Did you have the heat shield stuck to the outside of the pannier where the exhaust goes I believe it's part number 46542316611

Are you running a Y piece as well as the Remus?

May be the source of heat if you are

I use silver heat pad from a 1100rt available from a BMW dealer & it's thick and heat deflecting

Cut it to shape (it's oblong as stock) & stick it on

Remus also do a heat extension pipe to fit the can

No need for spacing out

In 14 years I've never melted a system pannier with the heatshield but I don't run a Y piece, just the Remus

Thanks. I am indeed running a Y piece and Remus. Previous test ride was a few years ago shortly after I acquired the panniers. I must have ridden all of 5 miles before discovering that the exhaust pannier was a mess of dripping plastic. Very keen to not repeat once I've got the replacement sorted.

I'll look into the heat shield and get one ordered. I'll also fit the Remus extension pipe and I think it's probably also worth getting some spaces made up to move the pannier out 1" or so.

I'll report back:)

Sounds very bizarre, never had that on any 1100/1150GS with System Panniers.....................must be the Y Piece creating the extra heat into the exhaust

I do remember noticing that the exhaust was sitting very close to the pannier - almost touching.

Just been out to take a few pics

My solution with the RT heatpad, cut up and applied

This Remus has a longer extrusion pipe as stock, must be a later one that curves away from the pannier (other bike has the earlier Remus)

Other bike and pannier, with just silver heat tape (no thick RT heatpad) and old style Remus

Not close enough to cause heat build up

Both bikes run OEM Cat and Remus though

There are two ways that the exhaust heat can affect your panniers. Radiant heat (the pannier being too close to the can) can be countered using the foil heat pads pictured. The other (and much more destructive) problem is exhaust efflux - the gas coming out of the end of the pipe. No amount of foil protection will protect plastics from what is, effectively, a blow-torch.

Your Y-piece has probably done two things - made your exhaust gases hotter (because the heat absorbed and radiated by the Cat now goes straight up the pipe) and angled the rear can outwards towards the pannier. Do not underestimate the damage this gas can cause - it buckled the 3mm aluminium of my "Worldbeater" panniers and torched the contents...

The answer is to put a pipe ducting the efflux out past the rear of the pannier.

(Or to refit the cat, put a stubby on and fit a full sized left pannier...:D)

Good definition Mike

What do you think of my set-up.....................I seem to have been ok up to now?

Some really helpful advice and pix there - thanks a lot, that helps:thumb

Had a y-piece with the OEM end can, and it burnt a hole in the end of the pannier. My solution was to put silver tape over the area, and I've seen others use heat-resistant sheet over the corner as well. Can burn the indicator as well.

Thanks for the heads up - already got shorter indicators fitted and a slightly smaller number plate following another exhaust related incident involving a Laser Hot-Cam system and lots of melted plastic.

Looks fine - I think the key element is that you still have the Cat fitted. It's clear from your pics that the gas efflux is directed wholly towards the rear, whereas Y-pieces tend (for some reason - probably poor manufacturing tolerances) to angle the can, and therefore the gas, towards the pannier.

It can get your rear indicator too...

I had a remus with a de cat 'Y' piece along with the plastic system panniers and I never had any melting or heat issues.

+1 as above. I appreciate that its probably no a lot of use given your previous experience but the only thing that i did was loosen off the mounting bracket on the end can to make sure that the efflux was pointing at 'fresh air' and then clamp it back on. If it's any use I'll take a photo of how mine is angled and post it on here.

A picture would be helpful and appreciated. I'm fairly certain that the exhaust wasn't pointing directly at the pannier during my last melting incident though.

No dramas. Will aim to do it tonight

Cheers Mike

Good pics, never had a Y Piece, so I guess it makes it easier to avoid that sort of heat damage
