Hi All

I am new to the 1200GS and the web site having bought my 4 month old model a week ago from Vines of Guildford, after having a Fazer 1000 for the last 3 years and a Fazer 600 for a year before that. I expect I will have a few questions about the bike in the future as the whole BMW thing is new to me.

My first question regards the exhaust, as I can’t afford the full Remus system yet I was thinking of fitting the front Y pipe, thus getting rid of the cat and fitting it to the original silencer. Does anyone know if this is possible or would you recommend getting the silencer before the Y piece?

Great bike so far apart from the petrol gauge reading full until it suddenly drops to half then seems to work OK. Vines say it needs a soft ware update that they are waiting for from BMW. At least its that way round!!

No such thing as a replaceable y-piece on a 12. You either change the whole downpipes (+cat) or the can. Personally I bought a Remus can, took the baffle out and it sounds the business. Don't need more power, so haven't done anything about the cat.

Fuel gauge - you get used to it. There IS only one bar from full to half, so it will never drop in increments. The last bit is fairly accuragte and the 'countdown' has never left me stranded and if you let it do to single figures, you nearly always get a 20ltr + fillup.

Enjoy the bike....you'll soon forget about the jap machinery!!!:D

exaust/gauge

So is the fuel gauge NOT a fault? Vines led me to believe that it was and BMW were working on a cure.

The exaust issue just comes down to cost at present I intend to get the full system but thought about getting it separetly and wandered which bit was better to get first for the best improvement.

There *was* a problem earlier where a nearly full tank would display empty. (i.e less than 20miles after fill up it would display empty). If you use the search function, you'll find several old topics about that.
The display on the dash is constructed in LED bars showing something like
50%, 20% 10%, 10%, 10% (Don't have the bike at my desk so mileage may vary :P). This means that it's impossible for the first bar (50%) to show something else, than, erhm... 50% :D
If you're riding in familiar territories, don't worry about the fuel in the bike until it say something like 30 or 20 miles left to go. Mine currently says 4 miles to go :D

Fuel gauge

If the gauge is acurate below half thats the main thing, I will have to get used to it. But I am just a bit worried as we are off to Spain in September and I don't want to run out of fuel in France on a Sunday afternoon!!

Other than that I can't wait for the Pyrennes and all those bends.
