Picked up a set of 664 bars yesterday and decided to spend the night fitting them. Lovely bars but i've a few problems that need urgent attention. I'm hoping some 1150 owners who have fitted 664 bars or similar have the answer otherwise it's back to stock...

1. The handguards no longer fit because the bar is shorter in length so the brackets overshoot. I like handguards, especially when they save the brake and clutch levers from snapping...

2. The left grip is screwed onto the original bar. I can drill the Renthal, but I'd prefer another way. Glue?:nenau

3. The mirrors overshoot the bar so they'll be the first to break in a fall.:(

4. The grips which include the heated wires are required, are these generic items or as I guess, BMW stock? I was intending to remove the grips and sell the lot.

5. The BMW bar ends don't fit, Renthal ones are £15 though. Vibrations are slight or non existent so I might do away.

----

My biggest problem is the damage that will be done in a drop - the mirror and lever is sure to snap.

Your thoughts appreciated.

Renthals

I used a Pro-taper bar and mount kit from Ricardo Kuhn (in the us)

His kits dealt with all the problems you're talking about and you may find some answers/help on his site: www.motomacondo.com

Looks like its not uncommon, there some new fittings here that allow the original handguards to be fitted. :thumb

Bars.

Look on the adventure riders site, someone here did a conversion fitting the original bars in to rental? bars to over come this problem.

I've fixed all problems apart from the hand guards. These won't fit because the bars are too short unless the end weights are used (and the full length BM' ones). I don't want to use the end weights as these are heavy and renthal bars don't suffer the vibration of the OE bars. Some thinking required...

End weights are about steering stability, not bar vibration. If it were the latter, they'd use rubber mounts (OK, they do!!).

No I'm keeping it, they've depreciated so much in the last year it's not worth selling. Currently "doing it up", Renthal bars are 1/3 the OE weight.

Whoopee doo, you're trying to save weight on a GS??
