My current project, a 1981 RT, is almost finished. I just need to repair and paint the fairing (Just  ). The fairings got the usual broken lugs and a couple of splits. what's the best way of repairing them? Do I build the lugs up out of fibreglass and then shape and grind them or is there something better out there?

:beerjug:

I used this...

Recently fixed a broken plastic slot on a windshield spoiler, the part that clips onto the fairing top, using Plastex. Although the job was done a bit roughly, (needs some patience) it has held incredibly well, really strong stuff.
Think i got it from motorworks or try this site: http://www.plastex-uk.com/

i know halfords have started selling a product for glueing plasic fairing pasrts back together.
Is your fairing plastic or with it being older, fiberglass?. if its the latter i would sugest using fiberglass matting and building it up

Fairing should be fibreglass and will repair easily with fibreglass matting and a decent filler such as Isopon.

Find the end of a split and drill a small 3 or 4 millimetre hole at that point before filling, it will stop the crack opening up further by releasing the stress at that point.

Lugs can be made from small bore steel (stainless if you can find any) tube and matted onto the original panel.

These fairings are superb to work with and given patience you will achieve a good finish.Rub down and build up with a good filling primer making sure you have no tiny air bubble pin holes in the surface prior to painting.

Good luck, harder you work luckier you get!

I had a Kawa GT750 once to which I fitted a large Trident(Rickman I guess)fairing that had a large crack along one of the mounting frame. I built it up on the inside with some fibreglass kit(resin and mat) I got from halfords. Worked a treat, very strong lasted for years without any signs of it coming apart despite mush abuse. :thumb
