as the title, it died first time i started it up, had to give it a bit of throttle then it stays alive... runs really rough as if on 1 and bit cylinders, did the TPS reset things( doubt it really does something though) and checked the routings of the throttle cables all is ok....

what else shall i check?

did a forum search but didnt find anything with battery and rough in the same search.

thanks in advance.

check the throttle cable PROPERLY - it's always been the right hand side, as you sit on the bike when I've lifted the tank

if that does not work, check you re-attached all of the earth cables - big thick one and a dinky one on mine, if memory serves correctly

Probably get shot down in flames for getting this completely wrong but I thought that if you had disconnected and reconnected the battery you needed to turn on the ignition but not start the bike and then open and close the throttle fully twice before firing up?

Might be worth a try.

Thats what I would try, it resets the TPS i think?

its a 1200, i have done the TPS about 3 or 4 times but no such luck... im back at work now anyway for the next few days so it will wait for me in the garage.

I would go with the throttle cables first. It only need to unseat slightly and it'll run like it's only firing on one :thumb

Checked the TPS sensor has not become detached?

Don't know if it's related but wasn't there a recall to check routing of throttles cables as they could get 'stuck'

Make a pentangle in salt crystals and light a candle at each point.

Turn three times clockwise to face the North Star.

Buy a spare FPC my son.

Sorry. Im pished. Ignore this post. :blush

had a look this morning, did another TPS reset, disconnected the battery etc but no change, cables look fine, both throttles move freely, i get all the usual sounds when ignition is switched to on.

it starts so that indicates the FPC is still working.

everything was fine before the battery was replaced, i had the old battery out 2 times before to charge it and again all was fine afterwards.

all connectors are seated.

would it be resonable to suspect the TPS?? do they have a history of failing?

Rob,

I dont think the TPS would fail, have you tried a differant battery ?

i am charging up the old one and will see what happens, i dont see why the new battery would make it run rough though as the alternator is working so should take over  but sods law is the new battery is causing the problem.

Could it be something that's totally coincidental, like a spark plug failing?

could be just seems too much of a coincidence that after the battery is changed it doesnt run properly. ill see how the old battery takes a charge but i doubt it will hold it. Worst case is i jump start it from the car with the old battery and go from there, only prob then is the car is in the lower garage and there is great big ramp back up to the bike room :blast ( multi storey underground car park in our building)

Ill pull the plugs out anyway and have a look while i am waiting.

ta for the replies so far.

My 1100 went similarly strange on me last night after moving the tank back a bit to get at some bolts. It fired up and would sit at idle OK. As soon as I revved it it starting popping, banging, stuttering, as if going onto one cylinder, revs fluctuating all over the place. I thought it was something serious. It was just the throttle cable as previously mentioned. The twistgrip felt perfectly normal but the end of the cable near the right hand carb was sitting on the edge of its housing rather than in it. Popped it back in and all was well, again.

i know the oil level indicator on the 1200 has some strange habits but just noticed on mine that its virtually zero, bikes been stood for about 3 months.

is a bit odd as the level has always been in the upper 3/4 range
