Absolutly fantastic link by Steptoe. Easy repair if you follow the advise to the letter.
Couple of questions, do you need to replace the tapered bearing on the crown gear?
how do you know when this is worn? and is it a major failure if it goes?
Any advise welcome. :beerjug:

Its usually just the big bearing that goes. The only time i've seen the taper roller go is after a catastrophic failure of the big bearing with the rear wheel flapping around (a picture that Steptoe posted). If you have the rear drive apart, turn the bevel assembly in the taper roller by hand to check for roughness;as well as a close visual check for damage/flaking surfaces.

Cheers Colban,
The rear seal was leaking so i decided to do the bearing and seal, Big bearing looked like new, but changed it anyway for peace of mind. Crown wheel and taper bearing looks as good as new also, so not really worried. Just wondered if this was another possible weak link. Bearing came off a treat using a wooden wedge and some gentle tapping, without any damage, so ive got this as an emergency spare if needed to get me home or to a garage if im away anywhere.

Thanks
Ron
