replacement front engine cover.

I am also waiting for a new front cover. According to my dealer they are not available at the moment. He seems to think they are altering the design or using a different contractor (or both). Its now on back order so he'll contact me when its ready.

Nice people at WMB replaced the following on my April '04 1200, 17,000 mls:

RHS rocker cover
RHS cylinder head
Front Cover
Rear Drive Unit

All suffering corrosion.

When I presented the problem we had long discussions including what I used to wash the bike - Fairy Liquid is not a good idea according to WMB HQ.

Any way all replaced at no charge. And now I use the Castrol Bike Cleaning Products as recommended by WMB HQ Technical Support. This way I know my warranty is intact.

Haapy New Year :beerjug:

Hello lads,

Do me a favour!
Each and everyone of you who is effected by this please write to BMW and tell them what a complete load of cheap skating W.A.N.K.E.R.S they're :spitfire

You have all paid top money for your bikes and this is what you get...It ain't good enough. Do something about it!

The more I hear shit like this the more it turns me off buying another BMW.

You have the power to change things...DO IT!

Pissed off & merry

Hold up a bit Bob...I'm not sure I follow you...Yes it would be nice if the world was a perfect place but it ain't.... :)

I paid top money for my 1200 and when I ran into trouble WMB put it right.

I paid top money for my Jag and when the engine failed at 90k Jag put in a new one for free.

I paid top money for my kitchen sink from MFI - designed by F Porsche (true!) - and when the drain failed MFI replaced the whole shooting match.

I paid top money for a pint of 6X last night and it was a bit sour and the landlady replace it with a smile.

I charge top money for software and when it goes wrong - and it does - I put it right - free if under warranty and at a charge if not.

Believe me WMB chaps will be looking at this site and they will get the message...

You have missed the whole point of what I'm trying to say :(

You pay good money for poooor workmanship...WHY!!! Why put up with it?

I know the world ain't perfect, but a company as big as, as well known as, as well respected as, has become complacent as, all big company's as...blah blah blah...

You pay your money so you want a bike that will see you through to the warranties end without much grief...right?

Happy new year!

Japan is calling me...

Had another new plate fitted in the week. Apparently I've got the new part number from the '06 bike. Its also fitted without the sponge. I'll give it 'till September before the corrosion kicks in again. Apparently it has some new anti-corrosion formula....we'll see.

Unfortunately the warranty for the part does not extend beyond the original warranty of the bike (1month) so I'll be paying for any replacement.....but any replacement part has a 2yr warranty - at a cost of about £300 fitted.

The paint around the bolts on my 1150GS is starting to bubble slightly after 4 years (just done a winter with it). I had this problem big style with my SV650 and was hoping with a more expensive German bike it wouldn't be a problem.

Here's to hope :beerjug: .

Now all this talk of "Sub standard bolts & Bad Paint" is quite interesting.

My mate has an 04 with almost 40k on it. His paint started flaking off and the cover was replaced under warranty. He removed the plastic cover and the foam and painted the alloy cover with Waxoyl under the foam and put the foam back in place and since then, there's been no corrosion.

I got my new 06 bike yesterday and asked the dealer about this as a precaution he confirmed "Older models had a bit of foam between the plastic and the alloy cover. This foam collected water and held on to the moisture, thus promoting corrosion but it has been sorted for the later models"

On reading this thread further (I posted my above response before I noticed there were pages of replies - sorry, new member!) some of my own questions have been answered but having a new bike, I'd like to prevent as opposed to cure.

Would removing the plastic cover and filling the bolt holes with waxoyl prevent this "Two metals corrosion" thing? as I don't live near a boad yard for the other stuff talked about.

Mine has 10,000 miles at 17 months old. I recently noticed this bubbling on my cover, I think it's safe to say "They all do that sir".

My advice would be to let it rot, get a new one near the end of the warranty then take the precautions you need. That way you start with a new one closer to the end of the warranty rather than a half knackered one that they refuse to replace.

Had a look @ mine again its an 05 which had no foam in from new used over winter 7000 mile .Its like new inside :thumb

Just had my cover done under warrenty and after a short journey home I noticed a strange noise coming from behind it quite loud I could hear it over the engine is this normal post mod or could the poly v belt be at fault? noise sounds almost like a radiator cooling fan running. Told dealer and am taking it in first thing tomorrow so no problem there.
